Paint codes and decals
« on: April 04, 2016, 05:54:09 PM »
Hi all,

The rebuild of the 400 is making good progress with the crankcases finally being bolted together last weekend.
Attention has moved to the paint for the tank and the repro DS side panels as from my own experience painting can take some time to get back from a paint shop. Anyway, I took my 'good' tank and panels to the paint shop this morning.  I expected the Honda varnish blue colour to be 'standard' apparently its not, there were at least 6 too choose from!  I managed to located a tiny patch of old blue paint on the filler cap neck although the painter warned this could be misleading as it may have faded. So a question, does anyone no of a colour code for the varnish blue paint?
Also, the decals on the tank, I know the 'Honda' decal should be red with a yellow outline but...... the painter thinks the outline should be gold along with the 'Super Sport' logo that sits below it and also the '400' on the side panels?  Can anyone point me in the right direction, I have looked at dozens of images of the blue bikes on Google but the more I zoom in the more the 'gold' if it is gold looks like yellow ???
Any help appreciated  :)

Get in touch with a member named Piki for the decals and there is no paint code. There is only one Honda varnish blue ;)

Hello there, for the "blue" model, HONDA letters in Red with Gold Surround/edge and SUPER SPORT letters in Gold.
400 Four Side Panels Decals comes in Gold.

If you need Decals, let me know.

Regards.

P.S: Thanks Trigger.

For the paint colour I have come across references to Toyota 8A1 which is generally considered as the best match.

I'm sure there is also decal positioning information on the web somewhere if you need that.

One of the old BMC/British Leyland blue colours is a near perfect match.....
Got the two panels sprayed up by a bidy shop and they look identical to the original tank.
I will look for the code.

Thank you all for the info. PM sent to Piki for a full set of decals and seat template.
The painter to his credit showed me so many swatches of the blue colour it became bewildering! I think we have found a colour that is marked as 'Honda' that is 99% matched to the patch we found on my old dented tank that came in primer with the project kit of parts  ::).
Great forum full of great and wise people, thank you all for your time and patience  :).

Got a favour to ask ... can you ask the painter if he will quote to paint me a single side panel in Varnish Blue at the same time as yours, please?  If he is up for it I can send both side panels, one of which, does not need painting and it  will give an indication of the correct shade. I already have the 'decal' for it.

Hi Ash.
I have just called the painter. He can paint one side panel for you with you supplying the decal for between £60-70 depending on the condition of the panel. Send the other panel as suggested for the colour match.
The company is called Cycle Sprays, address is; Unit 5, Cranley Works, The Common,  Cranleigh,  GU6 8RZ.  Tel no; 01483 27528. The chap to speak to is Tony.
This is the first time I have used the company,  they are actually about 40 miles from me but I took my tank and panels down on Monday so was able to see the set up and it's OK. Tony has had good reviews and is really busy so hopefully a good sign. I have been quoted 6-8 weeks turnaround but my tank was pretty bad in terms of dents and knocks.
Good luck.
