Motor insurance database - Mobility Scooter
« on: April 12, 2016, 05:46:06 PM »
I seem to have gained rather a large number of Electric Mobility Scooters, German made and apparently with lithium batteries.  Made by a company called Etropolis and the model is Belair.
This came about when I checked to see if my Honda GoldWing GL1000 was all present and correct on the ASKMID database prior to venturing out to get an MOT.
Yes, that number is on the database but the make and model is ETROPOLIS BELAIR, WTF?

I checked most of my other bikes and all came up with the same crap.

I contacted my insurers to see what was going on, to be told that there is a problem they are attempting to fix but all should be fine (perhaps a bad choice of word there) if you get stopped.
Here in Orkney you might think that there would be a zero chance of being pulled over, but Plod is not exactly run off his or her feet, so might just impound me and my bike to relieve the boredom.

Anyway, I got my fresh MOT and then tootled off to the Post office and the very nice lady taxed my very early GL1000 for nowt! I can't believe this stuff is now over 40 years old.

If you live in a plod heavy area it might be worth checking ASKMID,

Ian

I had never heard of ASKMID but thought I'd give it a try
Mine comes up as "Vehicle Make/Model: HONDA CB".
So not very specific but correct as far as it goes.
I suppose I should be grateful that it came up at all!

So at least you should be safe - my Daimler comes back all correct and that is insured with Peter James, as are all the bikes.  The guy at PJ said it was a problem with the whole database but only randomly affecting some cars and bikes.  He was told that the only way some vehicles could be entered was to use this very weird make and model designation.  Whoever is in charge of ASKMID's IT system needs his or her backside kicking. It's OK saying that all will be well but not every plod will be sympathetic if the all seeing computer says that number does not correspond with your vehicle.

Oh, sorry Haynes66,
Loads of pics and inane drivel on my web site, including the Daimler - but that's a relatively modern 2000 model, so I'll be 92 before that one is tax exempt.  :(
