So do I Plastigage or not given that I am pretty sure my measurements were spot on as the guy that measured them is an old engineering 'sage' from the NEL ?
Must admit that the old SOHC four crank (a 400/4) I ever fitted new shells to, I didn't Plastigage and it was fine (the 400/4 crank and shells on my current 400/4 looked so nice I just left well alone and refitted).
Having said this the Honda shop manual specifically tells you to Plastigage and not to rely on measurements.

Problably got one somewhere Julie but it will almost certaily be in a worst state than yours. The pin corrodes in the alloy despite the 'O' rings on the pin and the alloy part hole enlarges. Does anyone know if someone bushes these or sells a slightly oversize pin so you can ream out the alloy. I did this on my 750K0 setup but it's a different design and slightly easier.

That's a bummer Piki.. glad you are doing OK though.. bet you are selling lots of stencils now all of the seat cover sellers are missing off the HONDA LOGO

I was told it would be OK to use the colour either up or down a size without any detriment, as green is next to yellow in the sizing chart that should be ok Ash, just run it in nice and easy.
Funny how Honda told everyone to ignore these "Production marks" in the workshop manuals but then issued bulletins like these which made a mockery of that statement.
Cheers mate .. I suppose greens will be slightly tighter so should bed in nice. What do you apply to bearing surface when you Plastigage and during assembly? Big ends next .. all my 13 big end shells NOS are yellow but I reckon I need 3 sets of yellow and one green. So at worst will only have to buy two shells and at least the big end ones are slightly cheaper. What's the cheapest place? Also I have three NOS, but not bagged, big end shells that look like they are marked green on the side (lime green) but when I compare them with a bagged NOS and previously sealed one, with Honda label 13218-300-013 in the packet, they too have the same colour paint (well more like lacquer) but they are supposed to be coded yellow (described as 'bearing D'). Any idea how green the green should be cw yellow? Ash

TBF those Union Cycle ones look good on the previous post from Bodd. Can't beat having a member that's stuck his toe in the water and tried stuff out. You can also get Takasago rims sometimes on eBay but good original DID's are rare, particularly front ones.

At Stafford show the Devon Rims were 110 each though Roy and TBF they were cracking good quality. My DID original style re-chromes cost 110 each by coincidence. In addition, just won two auctioned NOS but rechromed due to 'shelf rash' original DID rims (one disc one drum pattern holes, both 1.60 x 18") last week off eBay UK for 100 GBP each. One of the only items I have bought for bikes that was actually better than described off eBay UK, which can be a veritable minefield of absolute sh*te IMHO. The seller is getting me details of where they were re-chromed , when he's back from holiday.

The chrome is fine, so is the quality of the wheel, when I built them there were no blemishes, no sharp or rough edges and unlike mentioned in the David Silver quote I didn't have to ream any of the holes for the spoke studs.
What DS prtobably means is that they are drilled for a disc front hub and if you use on a drum brake like CB250/350k then the hole drilling angle is different. Devon rims also make nice quality rims for Jap bikes and they will drill the holes to suit the hub. About the same prices as the DID ones from DS or a rechrome. They would probably miss the Made in England logo off if you asked as they manufacture. They also do highly polished stainless. I saw a CB250K0 on eBay once with them on and they looked nice. Ash

I have confirmation that the headers are single skinned.
Yes Mr Yamiya has stated this on the website now. shame but still a nice system.. side welds look a bit ripply though

Ash, I was told that Honda built them as if they had clearances found after a running in period so that all they needed was bedding in so even if you fitted all black and simply run it in with extra oil and filter changes I am 99.9% sure you will be OK. The engine in No 36 was built with all black and was OK all the time till it got burnt---would still love some time with the culprit and a megger
How about all greens then Bryan, for mains instead of yellow, as described? I am using the crank & rods you sold me yonks ago from your infamous lock-up BTW It measured up pretty nice. Ash

Looking at my crankshaft main bearing measurement 1 journal is coming out a green and the other 4 yellow but I have enough green shells NOS for the 5 journals. Will I get away with all greens if I take it carefully on first running the engine? Suppose this is one for Bryan, Oddjob and Trigger and other old sages . I don't want to take the shells out of the sealed Honda bags and Plasitigage them on the crank unless I am fairly sure. Ash

I think the diagram on page 4 of the first bulletin asnd similarly on page 2 of the second bulletin is wrong though because on the ones I have seen the weight code and journal size codes are each on opposite sides of the con-rod

I have a feeling that the hub is cast round the liner so swoppingone to another won't work, but on here somewhere is the address and number for a man in huddersfield who will machine out the old liner and shrink in a new liner then machine to size---he did several 500/550 rear for me quite cheap as i was in no rush.
I would not do this for a "Racer" as its possible for the liner to move if got very hot but i doubt very much you will do that to yours Ash

Cheers Bryan.. you have answered another question as there is alloy flashing around the exposed circumference of the liner so yes cast in. Will weigh up the pros and cons of drilling blind holes versus repair of K0 one. Yea not much likelihood of me doing any racing There used to be a guy I dealt with for medical flow straighteners for air, based in Leicestershire, I think, and his sideline was replacing Honda drum liners .. can't remember his name though and that was about 18 years ago! His surname may have been James. Ash

Got three of the CB250/350 K front drum hubs with the extra 'blind' spoke holes in, specific to K0/K1 models plus one later one without 'blind holes'. Problem is one K0 one has a cracked liner. Anyone know how to remove the cracked one and is it possible to swap them, as the later front hub one is fine. I do have access to a lab oven that goes to 450 degrees Centigrade . Other alternative it to CNC the 'blind' holes in the later one. You can spot that the drum is incorrect a mile off on a K0/1 . I think cracking was a common problem, I know my 250K2 suffered it back in the day. That K0 on 'Man Lab' that James May swapped with DS for his museum has the wrong front hub fitted BTW, probably for that reason.

Here is a library picture of the hub with 'blind holes'

Trying to sort out new bearing shells for my 750K0 and dug out the old Honda Service Bulletins... I have probably put these on before but for anyone who has not seen them before, here they are.

Cracking deal on later style 400/4 DID rims from Yamiya via Saisei (same as DS flogs but way cheaper). would be worth him sea freighting a batch in as I gather from James that the airfreight is quite expensive. Personally, I hate the side scripting on those later style DID rims but I am just a picky, obsessive b*gger and nowt wrong with them in all honesty..
