CB350/400 / Dunstal replica exhaust
« on: November 03, 2019, 06:11:45 PM »
Has anyone had experience with the dunstal replica silencers such as the the ones listed on classicbike shop: https://www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=dunstal . Have you had any issues with the inlet adapters or have they been fine?

Recently replaced the clutch plates and springs on my 400 four and gave it a little test in the back garden and a knock that wasnt there has appeared and sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the engine. After some googling it seems like it might be a lose/worn primary chain. Other sugestions have been a carb issue but I got those sonic cleaned and set up with new kits in them and its running on all cylinders.

Give the video a listen and tell me if im gonna have to strip the engine down again. https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMzQce26RgLVLq-uJWXg-i-HhjCKujmF-t1_xEDfvQGV3FPlmYHzeP0bBw3Xdvj3g/photo/AF1QipOW_5baTlb13aNyf2tYgRtuygXFKvbL2p11n6ZE?key=cUZpRDVqQjk2SVF3cjZzMVpOVTlyZW5WYUZsUEt3

CB350/400 / Oil leak help and sense check.
« on: May 25, 2019, 04:55:19 PM »
So there is an oil leak coming from the bottom of the barrels around where the oil breather dowel is. After taking the barrels off the gasket is nackerd and seems to be split where the dowel is (pic 1 and 2) so I'm thinking that could be the reason for the leak.

Now for the sense check. After having a look at the CB400 four engine rebuild that Nurse Julie posted it seems like the little o-rings that go around the dowels werent there (pic 3). So it seems to be a combination of both the gasket and the o-ring. I plan on replacing the gasket, obviously, but couldnt find the little o-rings for the dowels on davidsilvers, unless I missed them. Could someone point me towards them? They definitely should have the o-rings for the dowels right? I couldnt find any mention of the o-rings in part diapgrams I've been looking at.

CB350/400 / Cb400 four silencers
« on: May 19, 2019, 06:43:32 PM »
Been looking for a new silencer for the CB400 four I've just bought. I have found the davidsilverspares one but was wondering if anyone is using a different brand or a different style of silencer.

Going to look a couple of CB 550s this month, both are from 1977. Are there any specific things to check for on a CB550 and are there any specific problems on the 77 model.

CB500/550 / Buying Adivce/What to look for
« on: March 11, 2019, 10:30:46 PM »
I've been looking at some CB550's for the past few months. I've seen quite a few that need a bit of work go for around £1250-1500. Most of them have had a description along the lines of 'engine has good compression, turns over nicely but only starts on easystart, fuel system and carbs need attention'. I've rang up to ask about it but they never go into much detail so I haven't bothered to travel and take a look. Is it just typical of a bike this old that's been stood for some time or could it lead to a lot more work being needed?

If it is just a carb rebuild and fuel system clean would it be worth taking a propper look at one of these bikes or would it be best to spend the extra £1,000 ish and get a fully running bike for around £2,250?
