CB350/400 / Re: Alternator cover disc
« on: September 06, 2010, 10:45:55 PM »
Thanks, at least I now know the technical name for it!
I'll have to do a lot of work on the bike to justify a new shiney one though!!
Thanks

CB350/400 / Alternator cover disc
« on: September 06, 2010, 06:43:23 PM »
Has anyone seen a small HONDA plate/disc that is on the alternator cover advertised anywhere? I cant find a name for it anywhere! I am guessing it is a lightweight pressed disc. It is secured by a couple of screws, well I am assuming that as I have 2 small holes in my alternator cover!

CB500/550 / Which Sprockets to use - 550/4
« on: September 03, 2010, 07:33:15 PM »
Hi all,
Just coming to the end of a restoration and now need to consider which sprockets to use. Is there any great benefit deviating away from the standard 17 tooth front and 36 tooth rear?
My research shows that there is an 18 tooth front available and that the 500/4 had a 34 tooth rear sprocket, can anyone tell me of their experiences of mixing sprockets.
I am after a bike that will cruise well and not after a record 0-60 time!
Thanks.

CB500/550 / Brake pedal spindle
« on: July 24, 2010, 07:33:29 PM »
Hi all,
Rebuild nearly complete of a '72 500/4 frame with '78 550 motor, but having fitted 4 into 4 exhausts from a 550 K3, I now need to tinker around with the brake pedal so it clears the outboard pipe, does anyone know if there is a longer spindle fitted to any other bike that may ease my problem. I need the spindle to be 30mm longer than standard, or is the spindle from the K3 longer to get over the difference in the exhausts??
Hope someone can help before I go cutting and reshaping the pedal.
Thanks
Rick

Hi
Do you have a good kickstart lever for a 400/4?

Thanks for that Yoshi, I managed to get both bikes apart today and there is a difference in the size of the cam. I am now looking for an advance/retard unit just to get the points cam, just my luck, none on ebay at the moment!!

CB350/400 / 400/4 Ignition question
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:15:08 PM »
Help required again please guys.....I have decided to remove the electronic ignition fitted to my 400/4 and fit it to my 550/4 as I will be selling the 400 before long. Can anyone tell me if the points cam is the same on these 2 machines? I have a points assembly on a backplate but dont have a cam for the 400.
Hope this makes sense,   Thanks.

As far as I am aware the shell is correct, it is marked HM36M.

Hi
Coming to the end of a refurb of a 77 400/4 which has been at the back of the garage for many years, all I need now is a headlight rim and a brake caliper. Is there a rim from another model that might fit?
Can anyone help?
Thanks

CB500/550 / Re: Tappet covers - Disaster!!!

My lucky day......Nearly!!!
Spoke to a friend who knew a guy who had a mate etc, who happened to have a 30mm tap, got it all sorted with just minor damage to threads in cam cover, just need to put it all back together now.
Felt so lucky I bought a lottery ticket!  I will let you all know if I hit the jackpot there!!

CB500/550 / Tappet covers - Disaster!!!
« on: October 12, 2009, 03:42:33 PM »
After finishing rebuild I decided to check tappet clearances one final time and found to my horror that 2 of the tappet covers wouldn't shift by more than half a turn, they had only been fitted a few days!! After much consternation, frustration and cursing I removed the camshaft cover totally and carefully cut the offending items in such a way that they could be removed.
Unfortunately, the threads within the camshaft cover are partially clogged with broken tappet cover thread which was crumbling and causing it all to jam up, I am not able just to hook out the broken bits as it all seems virtually welded in!
Anyone know if 30mm taps are available to hire? Or any other suggestions to get around this.
If push comes to shove I do have another cover but that will need to go for vapour blasting before use, hoping to find a cheaper / easier option first!
Thanks

What is it? / Re: What model is this from?
« on: July 10, 2009, 07:43:43 PM »
They are marked 404, so from what has been stated already they are from a 550, thanks so far, but was there a 550 with one vertical and one horizontal lug?
I am tempted to cut, insert a length of stud and resecure for them to be both horizontal. They are destined for EBay anyway.
Thanks again guys.

Damned computers, they never write what you want to say!!! Besides, I attached 2 pictures but they never appeared!

I bought the panels hoping they would fit my 750/4 K5, if I remember correctly they were advertised as 750/4 but gave no model.
Thanks for your help.

What is it? / What model is this from?
« on: July 07, 2009, 10:55:26 PM »
Hi
I have a pair of side panels I bought but then discovered that one of the lugs appears to be 90 degress out. Firstly I thought it had been tampered with but there is no sign of any disturbance to the lug.
Does anyone know of a SOHC model that these could be from? They will be heading back to EBay as soon as I find out!
Thanks
Rick
