Title: steering lock
Post by: blackeagles on March 21, 2019, 06:10:19 PM
since there is a hole where the steering lock should be (into the steering stem - english style) i was wondering if anyone could confirm that 53600-404-611 is correct for a 1978 cb400f?

I have looked at cmsnl site for english version of parts list (and another i found on line) but there does not seem to be any lock on the diagramme!!

i know there are 3 types that fit different versions within different countries , one in the ignition switch, one under the steering stem and my one in the front frame tube but all of the locks i have seen on line seem to have a short 'bolt' that engages so just checking.

thanks

Dave Silver used to do an aftermarket one- which I feed as it was a lot cheaper.

i have looked at that one along with others that look the same but since i cannot find it listed on what i (think) is a parts manual for an english bike - and the lower steering lock on a usa/canada  looks the same as the one i need but has a shorter 'bolt' so i'm asking so i do not make a mistake.

I fitted this to my UK 1978 400. It fits and works fine.

I got mine from Frank as well for my UK 1978. But, my kit only came with the lock and spring. Wasn't a problem as the 400, as far as i am aware, never came with the swing door escutcheon anyway and Trig had to fit a special washer and pin, which we had anyway. Works a treat.[attachimg=1]

Yes, but like i say, not an issue at all. Did you fit the swing door to yours?

Hi Julie. Yes I did fit the swing door. I have the washer like yours and was in two minds about which to fit as I couldn't remember what the original should be. My lock had nothing holding it in place for reference. The swing door rang a bell so fitted that. Can always change though.

What's the age related bit about at DVLA ?.

as it's now officially classed as 'historic' (from 01/04) you have to fill out section (i think) 7 to change the taxation class so i sent it off with the v10 as i didn't want to stand around in line at a post office.

Ah, i see. I have quite a few to do after 1st April but my local post mistress does it all for me. I just ask her to change to historic , give her the log books and she does it all there and then on the computer....i don't like standing in a queue either, i suffer from queue rage 😀. I know a couple of people who sent their docs of to DVLA about 10 days ago for change to historic and DVLA sent the docs back with the amount to be paid to tax the bikes. Even though they are eligible for historic and FOC tax from April 1st, DVLA wouldn't do them as it was pre April 1st....bloody jobsworths.

bit difficult with the thick paint and scratches but looks like cb400f 1086985.

i'm only questionings this as some of the pics i see on the net seem to have a short 'bolt' and some seem to have longer ones - maybe some are screwed out as they would be if locked and some are not!! anyway i appriciate the help.

interestingly this was something they told me may happen and then gave me a different sa99 post code to send it to saying if i sent the v5c (with historic written in) the v10 showing 1st april start date (and i sent the v112 even though i didnt need to) and this section in dvla would "sort it all out for you".  i may have been a bit naive but only time will tell!!

Just to throw the Tiger into the peacocks there is no seperate steering lock shown in the paper parts book i got direct from a dealer(rips and all).

It only shows a lock set, ignition and seat, or seperate ignition and seat.

I know you got them and looking at pictures shown i would say they are the Neiman locks same as 550 K3 but be advised there are two different bottom yokes that change at frame number 1066198 and i do not know what the difference is.

Have fun folks!!!!!!

I had a look as well Bryan and could only find the same as you.......another Honda mystery. Mine is a Neiman lock on my 400.
Edit.....im wrong, it's a Neiman washer but not a Neiman lock on the 400🙄🙄🙄

thanks for the help, it seems its down to pot luck.

from what i can see with the various diagrammes (on say cmsnl as an example - i'm not picking on them especially) they all look to be the same irrespective of age and country!!  another anomaly, try finding the front forks!

'English' bike?  Is that different from a Welsh, Scottish or Irish bike? 😆

Sorry i am ENGLISH the rest of them seem to want to sod off and be on there own anyway! As to the parts book you should see the paper copy! Its one big exploded diagram for the engine with another for the frame and small supplements for the country/year variations with pages and pages of reference numbers to description +part numbers afterwards

I'm not going to get into politics, I've lived all over the UK and I want us to stay as a united kingdom.
It seems like the politicians of all flavours are doing their best to screw us up.

In the meantime, my 400 four is a UK model in all the manuals/lists, etc. 👍

if you look at the various diagrammes for this bike (on line etc) you will note it says 'model - english'

thanks all.

i bought one of these which fits other than the rivet which is too small (may have been drilled out, not sure) the rivet is about 3mm and the hole is about 5mm(ish) so am getting a small selection of other different sized rivets to see what fits.
