CB500/550 / Wiring question
« on: February 07, 2022, 09:31:29 PM »
Hello Everyone
It's been a while...
Finally got energy to crack on and get back to my Honda.
I got a harness from DS unfortunately colours of wires doesn't quite  match to the original...
I'm wondering if it is better to replace old wires with the new colours or to keep the old original colours.
In a way holding on to the OG colours will help with wiring as I don't need to mark up  the diagram with new colours.

Does any one had a similar issue, if so how did you resolve it?

CB500/550 / DSS Wiring loom
« on: June 24, 2020, 10:59:51 PM »
Hello Everyone!
Gosh It's been few years since I last worked on my Honda.

Finally decided to do a bit of a push, on electrics now...
So I got a ready made loom from DSS unfortunately since wiring on my bike has been badly butchered I'm struggling with working out what color goes where as they obviously don't match...

I wonder if anyone of you folks have a similar experience and could advice...

Also, to my untrained eye, all the wires have same thickness and I wonder should it be like this?
I have read here :) that headlight's should be thicker cable, I'm planning to go for a H4 upgrade and not sure if that's good idea.

Many thanks

CB500/550 / Starter solenoid 550f
« on: July 02, 2017, 03:10:15 PM »
I finally got all the bits together!
Went to start the engine and all that happens is a blowing a main fuse.

I think I have put together cabling in correctly on the starter solenoid.
I have 2x red cables one form battery and second for the loom on one side and on left there is black original cable going to the starter motor.
there are also two short cables going to the loom which color match the solenoid so I think that is ok.

Could anyone be kind and took a picture of the wiring around the solenoid?

Any thoughts?

CB500/550 / Head bolts
« on: November 01, 2015, 11:02:31 PM »
Slowly, finishing my bike and realized that few bolts are missing or are wrong lengths or are in pretty sorry state.
Can same one recommend supplier of bolts and copper washers.
I'm not particularly bothered if its original type of bolt or allen but I like to have them proper lengths and my local metal store doesn't have them, they either bit short or bit too long.

I'm thinking of getting a kit of ebay, but is it going to save me few quid getting them separately?

CB500/550 / Engine assembly question
« on: October 02, 2015, 10:00:30 PM »
Hello, after about 2 years i managed to put engine back together.
Thank you very much as I wouldn't be able to do it without help from this forum.

I'm looking thru manual now, trying to figure out last bits, i just had a thought that I fitted valve oil control no3 upside down, is it even possible?
Can someone kindly confirm that it only fits one way round? Cylinder block fit in without any trouble, so I think i did it the right way round...

CB500/550 / Drum brake question
« on: September 28, 2015, 11:30:59 PM »
Hello everyone, it's been awhile since I was active on the forum, still read it often but not much time to work on my CB550.
Today, i was cleaning my drum brake and came across rather worrying crack in the drum, should I be worried? There was fair amount of damage from water standing in and patches where obviously brake pads didn't touch the lining, I decided to clean it up with 400 grade sandpaper followed by generous amount of brake cleaner. I know that best way would be good old lathe treatment, still that crack worries me a bit.

Any thoughts?

I was lucky enough to be in Japan few weeks ago, while walking around sleepy fishing village Onjuku in Chiba, came across this beauties.
Like them a lot, have a soft spot for small four strokes.

Never seen 50cc CB before, shame didn't have more time to take better pictures.

CB500/550 / Pistons
« on: June 04, 2015, 12:31:49 AM »
Hello,
Still stuck with my engine rebuild.
Decided to re bore as there is are large "steps" on top of inners, hone did not clean them.
I need 0.5mm oversize found this on internet
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb550f1-super-sport-550-four-1976-england_model17113/piston-kit-050-non_06133374000p/#.VW-NbmRVhBf
they are just under 50 euros a piece, I wonder if there is a alternative source someone can recommend.

Also, my engineer recommended to look for cylinder sleeves, as he reckon they would be straightforward to replace and my standard bore pistons are fine.
But I cant find any...

Anythoughts?
Thanks

Thought I spread news and hope to get few of you to see racing or possibly race too!
Dirtquake has been a fun event for last couple of years, I'm hoping to have my cb550f ready for this.
I raced Honda crf450 in rookie class last year and this year bought Husaberg FE600 customized for racing which means taking front brake and changing tyres :) and thats about it.

Copied from website http://www.dirttrackriders.co.uk/

We have had some requests about dates and schedules. We have been waiting to agree a couple of things that have now happened. So here is our full Program for 2015 racing.
(There is a possibility of an extra 2 TT events in the program in 2015 TBA but these will not count towardsthe 2015 championship.)
Some really exciting news for the DTRA. We have made a change to the venue for Round 2. We will now be at the MCN Motorcycle Festival at Peterbrough on the same dates in May.
We have also amended the schedule to include our tie in with Sideburn Magazine and the Dirtquake event.
Full details on the website.
Riders if you have any questions or comments please email info@dirttrackriders.co.uk do not comment here please.

CB500/550 / cam chain tesioner
« on: February 10, 2015, 11:30:33 AM »
Hello,
I'm slowly putting my engine together.
I wonder how important is rubber/plastic tube in which spring for cam chain tensioner.

Just fixed my tensioner by bending ever so slightly teeth on the adjustment bit and realized that the part opposite adjustment screw was loose and that made teeth jumping over.
There is a bit of wear on the teeth but not on the screw, I think it will be fine.
My only concern is the tube in which spring seats, mine was cracked and while pulling it apart it broke as it was brittle.
Do I need to find replacement?

Thanks

CB500/550 / Valve seat guide
« on: December 01, 2014, 10:28:50 PM »
So, after almost 6 months and two broken exhaust valve seats guides, I'm looking for a new engineering shop who can do it...
Is it really difficult to do? I thought, you need press and bloody push old one out and then squeeze new one in after freezing it.

I didn't get charged for work, and they did honed cylinder block but I rather have job done.

Bloody boooring.

Any one can recommend a place to do this job around London preferably North London?

Thanks

CB500/550 / Top end refreshment
« on: March 03, 2014, 10:17:42 AM »
I started with broken tappet now it looks like a top end rebuild...
I'm about to remove cylinder block to replace gasket on the bottom of it, I would like to check if I need to replace piston rings and if pistons needs replacing.

How can I check if bottom end is in good nick?

Also, I have changed oil before this operation and did about 100miles, oil looks very dirty, there were clear signs of black deposit when I took rocker cover, and just have a look at the pictures of valves and pistons.
Interestingly when bike was running it didn't smoke, and form the pictures as suggested here before it must have done few miles, I would have thought that rings would be leaking oil and so it would smoke a lot.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Off to shops to get micrometer!
