CB750 / Wiring problem
« on: June 13, 2018, 09:45:51 AM »
I have a wiring problem with my UK 73 750K2. It has the separate handlebar lights on switch and the pilot 'P' position on the RH handlebar switch.

Currently I have lost the pilot light and rear light with the ign switch in the run and park positions.

All the wiring diagrams I have only give the wiring detail without the h/b light switch and the pilot 'P' h/b switch position, so bit lost how to trace it at the moment?

Does anybody have a wiring diagram for this model or a schematic of that section of the wiring covering the separate h/b light switch, 'P' switch position and pilot/rear light?

I currently have 12v on the Brown wire at the back of the ign switch and 12v coming from the h/b light switch but 0v on the brown wire(s) which feed power to the pilot and rear light.

All other lights are working OK.

Thanks

Andy

CB750 / Master Cylinder question
« on: April 30, 2018, 03:03:25 PM »
Can anybody advise what the smaller hole diameter is inside the fluid chamber?

Just had the M/C re-anodized and there was a bit of crud from the process in the hole. Have passed a 0.5mm drill by hand through it but wondered if I need to pass a larger drill through it?

Thanks

CB750 / Regulator Labels
« on: March 24, 2018, 01:25:56 PM »
Hi

Can anybody advise if the text label on the regulator of a UK 73 750K2 was on a white background, as per library photo or on a clear background as per Yamiya photo or would both have been used?

Thanks

What is the correct length for the rev counter cable for a K2? Some are being sold as being 22" which is too short?

CB750 / Hollow air screw
« on: August 06, 2017, 09:41:22 AM »
Were the early K series 750's fitted with hollow or solid air screws? If they were fitted with solid ones what is the implication with regards to air screw adjustment/running if hollow ones are subsequently are fitted?

CB750 / Advice on engine problem
« on: July 06, 2017, 03:29:41 PM »
Have just bought a 73 CB750K2. It is one that has had a complete engine rebuild, re-bore, chains, guides etc and had completed around 350 miles before purchase.

Over the weekend did around 200 miles, nothing exceptional to note.

Took it out on Tues and did notice a bit of smoke and a slight engine oily smell on startup but did not identify from which pot(s) it was from?

After around 30/40 miles it started sputtering and thought it need to go onto reserve. However, it did not improve so stopped to have an inspection. No 2 downpipe was only lukewarm so clearly a problem with No 2 pot, bugger.

Limmped home on three and removed the plugs, see photos, No 1 on left. No 2 totally black and carbonated. No's 1 and 4 OK but No 3 slightly black.

Decided to check the compression. No's 1 and 4 around 150 psi but No's 2 and 3 around 135 psi. All just within 10% of each other but with my understanding that they should all be within 150 to 170 psi No's 2 and 3 are low? See photos.

No spark at all from the No 2 plug so got a replacement which I fitted today.

On startup a lot of smoke from No 2 but all 4 pots now firing. Went for a ride and stopped after 10 miles or so. Now only slight smoke from No 2 so hoping that it was just a build up that was now burning off following the 30/40 ride home with No 2 not firing?

Anyway, carried on as the bike seemed OK so was hoping that it may have just been a duff plug? Stopped again after 20 miles and No 2 now practically free from smoke.

However, after around 30 miles it started to splutter again and was now firing intermittently on No 2.

Got home and removed the plugs again. No's 1 and 4 still OK but No 2 black again and No 3 also blacker than one would expect, see photo.

Is it a piston/ring/seal/valve/guide problem and excessive oil or is it carburetion or possibly a coil problem as both 2 and 3 are on the same coil?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Misc / Open / Chrome plating in South East?
« on: July 04, 2017, 11:58:57 AM »
Have a pair of handlebars that I would like to get re-chromed. Contacted London and Brighton Plating but they have advised that they no longer undertake such restoration work?

Any recommendations for good plating services in the Eastbourne/Brighton or South East area?

CB750 / Broken front engine mounting lug
« on: March 13, 2017, 01:28:54 PM »
Have been looking at a UK K2 but have just been advised by the owner that whilst he was tightening the front right 10mm engine mounting bolt that a part of the mounting lug has broken where the nut is held captive in the front casing channel. He is hoping to get it welded in situ but is this a know weakness with the cases in this position and is a successful repair possible in this location?

Is it a bike that one should walk away from?

Other Bikes / Smoking Norton Commando
« on: February 02, 2017, 04:22:51 PM »
A friend has a Norton Commando and following and engine re-build it started smoking on one side. Lent him a pressure gauge and he found one side was down and squirting some oil into the bore did not make much difference.

So he stripped the head and barrel off and found a valve not seating. He also found one of three part oil ring not seating well, no damage to bore or piston.

Has re-built engine and now finds that when cold it is fine but as it warms it now smokes like a two stroke on both sides. Compression pressure is only around 90 psi, which is low. Valve seating OK and it has oil seals on the inlet guides. Gets about a cup full of oil from sump and oil returning find.

Have suggested he checks crankcase/engine breather is OK but beyond that he seems to have checked everything. Could be that rings have not sealed well but it is a mystery. He has suggested fitting the old single cast oil rings again but was wondering if anybody has some advise/suggestions before he takes it apart again?

Thanks

CB750 / UK K2 Engine & frame No's?
« on: October 11, 2016, 07:28:08 PM »
I am looking at an UK K2.

It is listed as first registered 18/4/73 and has frame No given as: CB750-20691**. However, the Engine No is given as: CB750E-23051**.

That would indicate that it has been fitted with a 1974 K4 engine? Can anybody confirm/advise if that is correct as the various books I have looked give the 73 K3 engine No's starting at E2000001 and the 74 K4 starting at E2300001?

Thanks

Andy
