If the engine is built to mr Hondas specs it onlyneeds bedding in not running in. More imortant to not run with revs to low (lugging) than letting it rev high

No, the 40 is a different hub, rim, disc, spokes etc but the caliper is the same

That makes sense as mine has the tank without the flap over the filler cap. Incidentally, I was looking at a 400/4 at the weekend and the the front wheel and disc brake looked very similar to my 550; are they identical?

It’s like that at my house Dom, best foot forward and all that.

Can of brake fluid in your pocket to encourage it to fire if it bogs is a handy thing to have if stuck. If only to limp home if it gets moody and gives up. It’ll be carbs so you might as well gob full to get it running if yer stuck. Just don’t give it heaps

I was quite tempted this afternoon but didn't get a chance between people visiting, how many miles should I do to being with and up to what rpm?  I still can't get a rev reading so I'll be guessing that bit.

Guys whatever you do don't be tempted to spray 2k at home without a tried and tested air fed mask setup...for that you need a powerful compressor and a professional air fed mask...an alternative is to get your prep, primer and base coat on, put the decals on and get a body shop to spray the clear coat in 2k on the next day at the latest as the base coat changes shade slightly if left uncoated with clear....the previous coats can all be in cellulose which can be sprayed in ventilated areas with a carbon mask and eye protection....
I have sprayed hmg nisocoat clear on the RGS which is a fully hardening non isocyanate 2k clear...it's difficult to spray at home as it's so thick [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I think I'm just worried it's going to leave me stranded down the bottom of a hill, I can only go downwards from my place

I'm with Roo here, run it get the pistons  to settle in a bit, it's amazing what some warming and cooling down of an engine can change.
If your dynamic timing is set a few miles will help you balance the carbs with more certainty as and when.

Get it out on the road mate, you’ll know what needs sussing when you ride it or at least a starting point. Don’t run it on the bench it’s too hot and it’ll just knacker yer liners, get her out on the road and give it varied conditions. That’s the better way although takes longer than you want. I’ve not run mine for ages waiting on other bits for that reason. Seats ordered and away, just waiting on my paint slot and she’s done.
I’m dying to tune her up but the risk is too great after going to all this work to bugger it up just when you’re within inches of her being done, done.
