Tricks & Tips / Re: Engine Removal / Intallation Easy Method
« on: April 23, 2017, 11:07:01 AM »
so, 3 and a half years later ....

This is installing the engine on a CB500/4 , removal is just the reverse procedure. Same procedure can be used on the 400, 650 and 750

1. Remove sump, oil strainer, oil filter housing, breather cover and exhaust studs from the engine (photo 1)
(Attachment Link)

2. Sit the engine on its side , kickstart side down . This is important it doesn't work as well if the engine is the other way up. (photo 2)
(Attachment Link)

3. Lower the frame over the engine and install the two lower engine bolts (photos 2 & 3)
(Attachment Link) (Attachment Link)

4. Have some blocks of wood in place to roll the frame / engine aassembly onto in upright position. The wooden blocks should be positioned to avoid the side stand bracket (photos 4 & 5) (Attachment Link) (Attachment Link)

You might want to protect the frame's paintwork by wrapping it in bubble wrap or similar before you start

i found it a bit further on than just twitchy ... and thats with the damper fitted !  I've used an NHK ODM 500, about £75. GSXR also fits but sits a bit high. First two photos are GSXR, other three are the NHK. Might be okay if you dont plan on exceeding the national speed limit I suppose

360 centres on the new rear shocks. I've tried to compensate the forks by placing a 1inch collar/ spacer to reduce the spring sag and 160cc of sae 20 as per the book. I may need to tinker with the levels after my first run out tho. I know messing with the geometry can bugger the handling but I'm willing to compromise a little to keep the rear end lifted that extra inch or so. I would welcome any thoughts gods or bad!

ah, same as mine then. I've put a steering damper on ....which was just as well as it hits tank slapping tendencies at about 85mph to 90mph. The damper just about makes it manageable. I'm going to try a custom made yoke set next (with 10mm les offset) next, I think that should sort it ... but mucho spondoolies so wont be happening in a hurry.

mick's photo matches the parts diagram schematic, so I guess its correct .... and holds the blue wire off potentially hot coils ?
Only got room for one horn bolt .... steering damper means the horn gets in the way if its mounted orrectly

here you go Trig, it protects / guides the blue wire from the coil to the loom. Or at least thats what it does on mine ! ..... while noting that the parts diagram has it the other way round and the other way up

I think whatt you are describing happened to me . The problem was that the tensioner mechanism wasn't seating right in the slot in the casing that the base of the tensioner is meant to sit in......  later ... reminder to self when repling tp threads "always read the thread proerly first before replying" "always read the thread proerly first before replying" "always read the thread proerly first before replying" "always read the thread proerly first before replying"  "always read the thread proerly first before replying" "always read the thread proerly first before replying"..... ... remember reading that trail varies acroos the 750 models. If I remember right its the later ones that have the shorter trail ... damned if I can remember where I read what the differences between models though ... but i'd agree that an extra half inch at the rear end doesn't seem that much . Could you borrow a standard set off someone first to see if it makes a diff ?
