I have a genuine Snap On gasket scraper and it's flat across the cutting surface, your idea of a curved surface though makes a lot of sense. A lot harder to sharpen though I'd imagine.

I found some long bottle brushes (with handles) that I could trim to go down the main gallery under the crank Ted, the amount of crap that came out was unreal.

Palins were definitely a main Honda dealer at one time. Would have been around 1976-7 when I was there, for some reason Osmaston Road keeps nagging me as the address, is that correct?

Most likely the owner thought to make it look more original and just painted some of the parts which Honda used to paint. He's gone a bit overboard though, they didn't paint the whole nut, just enough so if the nut etc was disturbed they could see as the paint would crack. It was a safety thing and also a warranty thing at the same time, if the paint was broken they'd deny the warranty claim for instance.

No, they are casting marks and every clutch casing has them. It's where the alloy was injected into the mould, the plug is the result of where it was cut off the mould.

Do you need the dowels Simon? I've got quite a few stashed around somewhere. A bit of heat and a good pair of pliers and twist them out. Some get ruined as they can rust themselves into situ but 80% come out and can be reused.

I got my 500 parts book from a shop in Derby, I'd ridden down with the future missus and I'd bought and asked for so many parts that he asked if I was interested in buying a parts book to make it easier, cost me £5 and I still have it, it's really battered and tatty now and pages have come loose but I'd never swap it. It's even got some prices hand written against part numbers, which make me smile when I see them and compare them to todays prices.

Shop was a main Honda dealer, somewhere close to the city centre IIRC. I may recognise the name if you know it. Palins? maybe

OMG I posted that without reading Tims post. Yep, Palins is correct.

Odd that set having only 1 starting tap but 4 finishing ones. You'd have thought all the same.

500 I'd say is most likely a restoration. People always seem to apply to much yellow paint to the bolts to make it look like it's not been touched. Honda generally didn't apply that much.

I'd be interested to see his price, work that good isn't usually cheap. Really must get my bead blasting cabinet working, save me a ton of sanding. £500 for a decent compressor though. Maybe the January sales can help  ;D ;D

Same price as Fowlers?

£57.34 including VAT & delivery.

£51.52 from Fowlers Ted. £48 if you can find a Kwack dealer to order one for you and you pick it up. I got mine to order me 3 so the petrol cost was split 3 ways, 15 miles there and 15 back and went on my 1300 so less than a gallon used.

You do realise that if you go with brown you'll have people saying that's a really shit colour mate  ;D ;D ;D And they'd be right.

I've seen a couple of frames when going to pick my bits up from the powder coaters, one was Candy Blue and the other was Candy Purple like the old Fords, Aubergine I think it was called. Utterly stunning the pair of them, I was gobsmakced by how nice the blue one was, I even convinced myself to have mine done in that colour it was so nice. However it wouldn't suit the rest of the paintwork so I talked myself out of it.

I'm seriously considering having the 1300 frame done in Candy Apple Red, they did a model with a post office red frame in 2007, always liked it. Plus my 1300 is Pearlescent white with Candy red inserts so it would go really well with it.

Not being funny here Tom but I've scrapped better bikes than that  ;D ;D ;D

Engine bolt most likely corroded inside the engine not the frame, that could be a BIG problem.

What happened to the left hand side panel, you have an electrical fire under there?

Green, Green, Brown, Brown, Brown.

That's the biggest shell allowance for the crankcase coding, A can only have had Yellow or Green from the factory, B can only have had Green or Brown. So chose the thickest of the 2 colours available and run it in carefully.

If you want a professional job, then send it to the professionals. Briteworx.co.uk

To achieve a pro finish you will need a motor 1KW minimum, a ton of mops , soap bars, lime and safety equipment. The part also needs to be in good order to start and most professional polishers vapour blast the part first to remove any corrosion and contaminates  ;)

Got to disagree with that Graham, some are good, some are cowboys who claim they can do a decent job but do the exact opposite. I'd match some of my polishing up against any pro, I don't have half of the stuff you list and I've got great results with casings that a lot of pro's wouldn't even have touched. The end results depend a LOT on the amount of effort you put in BEFORE it evens goes near the mop, the more effort, the better the result IMO. I've just spent 5-6 hours on one float bowl because it had been chromed and even having the chrome professionally removed, it didn't remove all of it, there were patches where the nickel was still attached and that's a huge problem to remove. Took me many hours to sand it off, only done 3 bowls up to now and not looking forward to doing the last.
I'm going to attempt to restore an old 550 alt casing I found in my last job lot buy, it's been done the road HARD, literally loads of gravel rash etc, deep gouges and even some of the lettering like the Made In Japan has been affected, I want to see how good I can get it, I like doing stuff like that, just to challenge myself. If it turns out ok I'll sell it, if it doesn't I'll junk it. It's only time, I've got quite a bit of that on my hands at present.

BTW Ted, link doesn't work.
