That seat looks as comfortable as itchy hemorrhoids on a long flight.

If the stanctions are straight (or slightly bent) get them straightened and hard chrome plated by Philpotts in Luton. The finish is far superior to the normal decrotive chrome plate fitted as standard. Price is about £140 for both stanctions. Turn around time is 4weeks. They will also rechrome the top nuts if you ask for an additional cost.

Philpotts are excellent and been around forever too.

Just been to have a look and from the VIN number its a 1980 RD250LC but the engine is definitely a 350.

Is this still a worthwhile investment or should i walk away?

Bike is in amazing condition.

Tons of 250’s were converted to 350’s and not worth anywhere near as much as a genuine bike

Thanks for the info everybody.

One last question:

Has anyone got any tips on how I persuade the missus to let me keep it in the living room?

Garage is full.

Put a light shade on it and spread some avant-garde magazines on the coffee table

Great technical read Ash. 104mph and 34bhp on a prototype 4-stroke twin in the early 70's was good going, no doubt there was more to come.
I know of several completed bikes that 'escaped' from the factory and fell into private hands later on. A couple of magazines have featured road tests of these and all were very positive.
When you consider most of the technical issues had been solved at prototype stage by Doug Hele who was in my opinion the most gifted engineer in terms of British bikes it was a real shame the lacklustre management of the day persistent faith in pouring funds that could have been used to productionise the Bandit instead of funding dead ends such as the Aerial 3 wheeler.
A book I would recommend to any bike fan is Bert Hopwood's 'Whatever happened to the British motorcycle industry' a brilliant read. The engineers were there ready and waiting, unfortunately the management were only interested in quick returns. A bit like Dragons Den on the TV!

I can just imagine the British bike industry on Dragons Den  :)

Mine is pretty good but got a couple of dings (and it's now unavailable of course) which I could sort out quite easily but will not then be suitable for re-plating so I'm thinking of painting it (spray) with something as close as possible to the original finish (1970's Players No 6 fag foil or close) until I can track down a good one. Does anyone have any rattle can suggestions for this? Thanks.

The Black Bomber Board / Re: Bomber reviews
« on: January 03, 2019, 09:52:37 AM »
The reason I combined them is that if you read the Motor Cycle one you would have been 1st in the queue to buy one but reading the MCM one you may have been rather put off. Considering there was no internet etc. your average rider would have heavily swayed by what they had to say in those reviews. Was the reviewer David Dixon the same as the Dixon Racing chappie?

The MCM test there was so stilted as to be laughable now. The truth was that in the real world that bike was the first nail in a very quickly buried coffin as far as the British motorcycle industry was concerned and rightly so. Pretty much the same as having the Norton Commando bike of the year time and time again despite far FAR superior bikes being available. A lot of those old publications were far more set in their ways than even the British bike industry was but the British biking public voted with their feet in a growing tidal wave of real world common sense.

CB750 / Re: Box section swing arm?
« on: December 26, 2018, 02:12:02 PM »
You could try Dave Degans at Dresda Autos in Rusper. He used to make his own box section arms for a number of bikes. I have one fitted to my Triton but I know he also made them for Honda's so is likely to still have the pattern.

Not cheap but very popular back in the day for sure

I can’t remove this using my phone and comatose son means I can’t get at my PC until later.

Funny though isn’t it what some people believe? And that they can spread that message by posting on a bike forum
