I sent the below email to DSS last Wednesday - absolutely no reply. Seems like they are happy to take my money but wont go an extra few hundred yards to help

I just bought a 500 4 gasket set from you (p/no PFGS CB500F)

The image you show on your web site is an NE branded set BUT want you sent me was NOT Ne branded it was just in plain card packaging

Now there is known issue with aftermarket head gaskets and O rings where some aftermarket gaskets are thicker than the OEM gasket p/no 12251374306.

Where this is the case the O rings do not seal properly and there is Oil seepage from the head and I know this is not an issue with NE branded products.

Can you advise either of the below

1.   Is what you supplied NE branded
2.   Can you measure  the thickness of the OEM gasket (I see you have stock)

I just wanted to check I am right in my assumption.....

 Are O ring dimensions in the Honda parts manual quoted as Inside Diameter and Thickness which is my conclusion

Hi

I need to change my head gasket and can either buy the OEM one from DS OR I could get the aftermarket set from DS which gives me a complete engine set for same price

And advice on way to go our an alternative source of aftermarket stuff that works

Reason I ask as in an earlier post Trigger suggested that aftermarket ones are no good cos they are thinner and the o rings won’t seal which is the problem I have with an oil weep that is deffo coming from the head gasket level.

Strange as on an earlier build i used an aftermarket set and had no issues

CB500/550 / Front Brake adjustment question

I am having some issues setting up my front brake. I have adjusted it according to the manual so wheel spins freely but then when i squeeze the brake it seems to be binding.

I have checked and lubricated the swinging pivot and this is all moving freely so I cant understand why the brake is binding all the time.

Makes it a hard job to back it out of the garage as well!!!

CB500/550 / Tank removal - it's now p****** me off

Every time I take the tank off the fuel pipes on the petcock see to have nearly glued themselves to the petcock tubes and its always one hell of a job getting them off again.

I have tried Vaseline on the tubes but that didn't seem to help.

Just put them back on with a spray of silicone sealant and they slide on a treat but I know when I come to take them off again they will be "welded" on again

Any prior experience/tips most welcome !!

CB500/550 / Head Oil Leak

Have a small oil leak definitely coming from head (suspect O rings between barrel and head)

This is a new replacement head gasket and O rings from a recent top end rebuild so its not an age thing

Trig did comment on a prior post that aftermarket O rings are often thinner than OEM so could cause this.

What I wanted to ask, is if it is worth just slacking off and re-torquing the head bolts (I know this is often a should do after a new head gasket and I didn't do it) before going the whole hog and installing OEM gasket and O rings.

I have a slight oil leak that i am sure emantes from the o ring between the head and jugs

Is there any easier merhod to replace this without taking the head fully off

I suspect not but thought id ask in case there is an easy way

I am fitting a new petcock in a week or so and wanted to take the opportunity to give the tank a good clean out, any recommendations welcome as to how to get any low lying bits/shrapnel out

The tank is in good nick inside I just want to clean it out

Oh I hate this annual bash !!!

Last year my 16 Yamaha Tracer and the Four were £153 with Hastings

Now Hastings, Bennets and others will not cover the Four as they say its classification has changed to an AB7 or something

Carole Nash quoted me £323 for both which is more than 2X what I Paid last year

I can get 2 separate quotes at £105 on the Tracer with Hastings and then a further £124 for the Honda with Footman James but prefer to have both on same policy

Any recommendations anyone I hate having to go through this nightmare every damn year

Has become somewhat sticky and jumpy above 60

Know cable and drives and cushions are all ok

Is there a way of lubricating the internals without stripping it?

Honda Tech Spec says 14L and 4L reserve.

Does this mean 10L before I hit reserve and then I have 4L left i.e. is 14L the TOTAL capacity?

Anyone got one in their pile of bits they would be willing to part with, for a fee of course

The air vent pipe has snapped off on mine, probably doesn’t matter as long as the carbs are free to vent still but knowing it’s missimg will eternally bug me I know
