Misc / Open / DVLA have upped their game
« on: March 05, 2022, 01:09:30 PM »
3 weeks to get my 1980 CB650 registered.

From other peoples experiences I was expecting to wait months.

Posted everything off Sat 12th Feb and got registration back today.

Misc / Open / How long to register an old bike these days?
« on: February 11, 2022, 03:46:53 PM »
Just about to send all the stuff off to DVLA to register my 1980 CB650, just wondered how long it’s taking these days roughly?

Did my CB550 Feb 2018 and it took 8 days.

Misc / Open / Tyre sizes imperial to metric
« on: September 15, 2021, 07:53:46 PM »
My 650 needs tyres. Currently 3.5 x 19 and 4.5 x 17 imperial.

I realize 3.5 is going to be approx 90 mm width and 4.5 is going to be 110 /120 mm.

When looking on the web for replacements they have the second number which is guess is the profile as a percentage of the width (the same is a car tyre)

My question is what profile percentage would be closest to the original imperial tyres, most of the ones seem to have listed 70,80 and 90.

Hope this makes sense.

Found out the other day that my oil pressure switch is leaking at the screw thread where the wire to the light goes.
The switch is just over 3 years old so I’m wondering if it’s just switch failure or there is something more sinister going on?
Did over a hundred miles last Sunday, bike behaved perfectly, except the sprocket cover had about half a cup of oil in it which is now over the front lawn.  :(

Big thanks to Nurse Julie who sorted me out a replacement switch in mega quick time  :)

Misc / Open / Dehumidifiers in Aldi
« on: March 13, 2021, 07:25:23 AM »
Just got an email from Aldi with their latest offers on.
Home dehumidifiers £119.99, might be good for a damp garage, looks like it’s got good reviews.

Misc / Open / Alternatives to PD50 carbs?

Picked up a cheap 1980 CB650 and just wondered if I can replace the PD50 carbs with something better.

Misc / Open / Accidents whilst working on bikes or cars?
« on: January 15, 2021, 08:44:59 PM »
Just wondering what sort of accidents people have had while working on their projects?
Not the usual cuts and bruises, something a bit more juicy.

I’ve had to have splinters of an MGB door skin removed from my eye.

CB500/550 / Top end rebuild, do I replace the camchain?
« on: October 27, 2020, 03:14:42 PM »
My 550 runs and rides pretty good, no obvious knocks or rattles or smoke.

I'm going to rebuild the top end over the winter simply because I have a few oil leaks coming from between the barrels and the head.

I'll do the usual things but just wondered if its worth changing the cam chain while its apart?

Bike has done 16K miles, obviously I don't know how well its been looked after over its life, I've done about 1500 miles in the last couple of years on it without any problems.

Project Board / Project rattle can
« on: September 17, 2020, 07:28:03 PM »
The paint on my 550 tank had gone strange with thousands of cracks like crazy paving.
As I had nothing to lose I thought I’d rattle can it.
Probably 25+ hours work went into the tank, never attempted it before but it came out pretty good.
Will give it a proper polish in about a month once the lacquer is hard.

I know they are not the genuine colours, I just wanted something similar.
