CB350/400 / Re: Wiring loom - which way?
« on: September 25, 2021, 09:56:17 PM »
Thanks for all the info and advice. Managed to swop it out pretty painlessly.

Good news is that the colours in the DS loom are pretty accurate for the model I have, which was a relief. Took loads of pictures as I took the old loom off which helped.

CB350/400 / Wiring loom - which way?
« on: September 25, 2021, 11:12:04 AM »
I've decided to replace the remnants of my old wiring loom, with a nice new shiny version.

But... which way to start?  Do I tackle the birds nest of the headlight first, or get some quick wins by starting at the rear and leave the top end to last?  Any recommendations/preferences?

Thanks all.  I'll change the oil and see how that gets on.  Always good to save the £

CB350/400 / Fork springs
« on: March 03, 2021, 05:30:20 PM »
My front forks feel as if the springs are a little on the worn side, and looking for any recommendations.  I've used Hagon on my other bikes, but they don't supply a replacement set, and nor does Mr Silver.  Spookily there isn't much chatter around replacing springs on the forum, so am I in the minority?  Is it just a case of an oil change to a heavier weight like 20w?  I don't experience excessive dive (probably because I'm not going that fast!!), but can be a bit crashy on bumps.

Thanks for any advice

Just spilt my coffee

I definitely agree it's not the cheapest.  Perhaps I'll undercut that and put mine up for £10,988  ;D

I have no experience of either but I wish the company that makes them would use the correct colour wires 🙄🙄🙄🙄

You would have thought that was a given  :-\

CB350/400 / Which wiring loom?
« on: November 04, 2020, 05:23:39 PM »
The wiring loom on my 400 is a little worse for wear, and thinking of replacing it.  I see that DS has one, and also Legend Motorcycles on ebay.  Any thoughts on preference?  I like that the Legend one is made with 'Love'  :)

I feel I give quite a bit of my cash to DS, so good to share it around if I can.

Thanks for the replies. and the pics.

Looks like an excellent job on the frame, so I will give them a call to chat it through as suspect my welding skills aren't at that level.  I think it will be a winter job, as I don't want to take it off the road at the moment  :), but will keep a close eye on it.

CB350/400 / CB400F top rear shock mount corrosion
« on: June 23, 2020, 09:52:50 AM »
Was cleaning the bike after an evening ride (aren't the evenings amazing at the moment and were the headlights really that dim back in the day?) this week, and I noticed a small amount of corrosion on the frame.  Its the 'triangular' top mounting point for the near side rear shock.  Not horrific, but obviously a stress point.  Has anyone repaired this area before?

Is it best to fabricate a new mount or use an off-cut from an old frame (anyone have such a thing hiding in a shed?)?

PS there are definitely more insects around following lock-down.  My jacket and helmet are literally 'furry' at the end of each evening ride

CB350/400 / Re: Left hand lower frame bolt
« on: May 27, 2020, 09:46:31 AM »
Thanks both.  I took the bolt out this morning.  Is a non standard bolt as its stainless steel, and measures 74.5mm.  Its grooved the casing very slightly, but no sign of any other damage, so looks like I've been lucky, and I've taken 1mm off the end, so all good.

Yes, THAT bolt...

So a quick question, does this look right? Should there be any gap between the end of the bolt and the case? The PO has obviously replaced it at some stage, and whilst I don't have any oil leaks, it is incredibly tight against the engine case, and yes, it does have the spring washer fitted.  I haven't taken it out, but it looks to be between 74 to 75mm in length, and CMS show it as a 10x74mm.

Probably fretting about nothing. I'm almost tempted to remove it and skim a little off the end.

CB350/400 / CB400F RHS fork leg bottom - brake mounts
« on: May 06, 2020, 09:36:17 PM »
On my CB400, the right hand side (near side in UK) bottom fork leg, has the brake mounts - see pic.

I know some CB500F's had this as an option to then upgrade to dual front discs, but is this something that was standard on some 400 bikes?  My suspicion is that the bike has had a trip down the road at some point and was replaced with a 500 fork leg, but I'm intrigued...

CB350/400 / Re: CB400F inlet O rings

Hey no worries on the hijack, and DM sent!  I am following you on  the 'bay, but hadn't spotted the 400 O rings, just the 550s for some reason.

Thanks everyone for your responses  :)

QQ - and I have had a search but couldn't find the answer.  Does anyone have the dimensions for the inlet O rings?  I see Mr Silver sells them, but a little expensive, but if I have to, I have to...

Alternatively, anyone know of another source for them?

New Member Introductions / Re: Another 400/4 on the road
« on: April 21, 2020, 08:45:26 PM »
Its been a little while, but I’ve spent the time gradually working my way through the bike.

Biggest changes were the tyres (got rid of those very scary rubber for some Avon's) so feels just a bit happier now in the corners.  Also, had the tank repainted as per the pics - although I doubt you can see the difference, but it has improved the bike no end as the epoxy blobs have now gone

Now comes the bit where I admit to my mistake....

So, I thought I had a rich running bike.  Bit of a hole in the mid-range and wouldn't rev out, with very fouled plugs.  So naturally, I stripped the carbs, replaced jets and even invested in a sonic cleaner.  Many a happy few hours rebuilding and adjusting the needles before slotting them back into the engine.  Did you know a C clip for a jet needle can travel over 10ft by itself when trying to clip it back in?? All was well until the test ride (ie 10 mins).  Popping and banging, and no power at the top, but very clean plugs.  So now must be running lean?  Once more into the carbs we go and more adjustment of the needles, and more stuffing the b@ggers back into the engine.  No joy, still lean.

Much scratching of head, and after reading the entire contents of this forum, it transpires that as I have a Boyer electronic ignition, it doesn't like to have a resistor type plug and cap.  Swapping out the plugs for non-resistor standard plugs, and further removal of carbs to reset to standard settings, and we seem to be back in business.  Ugh! The only downside is that I am unable to test ride the bike to see how it all works properly until after the lockdown.

I guess you live and learn.  At least I now can remove Carbs in under 15 minutes and they are lovely and clean, so fingers crossed I won't have to do this again in a hurry.
