CB650 / front brakes
« on: June 18, 2011, 09:11:03 PM »
Hi folks, long toime since I posted, but I'm doing some work on judodave's 650z and wonder if anyone can help.

We're having an almighty problem getting the front brakes lever to go firm, but I'm stumped to know what else to try. I seem to recall my previous 650 never had a very firm lever, but can't say if it was like thi one or better.

Anyway, the bike's got new pads, new pistons and seals in both calipers, new master cylinder seal kit, a new 'o' ring around the base of the plastic master cylinder reservoir. Just about everything, except the hoses are new.

I've tried bleeding with a syringe by sucking fluid through from the reservoir down and out the bleed nipples, and also by pumping fluid the other way (into nipple until it comes out of reervoir). I've also done the traditional undo nipple-piull lever-do up nipple-release lever etc way. None of them make it any better which makes me think I've got the best I can expect.

I can get the wheel to brake hard when pushing the bike along using about 1/2 - 3/4 lever travel and it feels firm, but the lever never goes solid. With more pressure you can always squeeze the lever harder which seems wrong, even though the brake performance might be OK.

I recall my previous one was a bit like that, but that was few years ago. Does that sound 'normal'. I've got an MOT booked in the week.

Anything else these 650's are known for in the braking department that I should check?

thanks, Phil

Misc / Open / speedo calibration
« on: June 06, 2010, 09:34:32 PM »
I'm looking for a 'vintage' style large speedo to change look of my project, but not sure about calibration. I can't imagine they're all geared the same, but I might be wrong and find it's a simple proposition to find another speedo at an autojumble and hope it'll work (I doubt it...  ::) )

I can't believe it'll be anything like that simple, so has anyone else swapped speedos? Do people re-calibrate speedos? Is it worth it I wonder or shall I just re-use my old one?

Misc / Open / tank sealer on GRP tank
« on: June 06, 2010, 09:28:44 PM »
Checked a GRP tank today that's been in the garage for a long time, and it leaks where a fixing stud is bonded in to the underside. Otherwise it's fine, and a nice tank so I'd like to use it.

Can I use one of the tank sealants to fix this, and is that a good idea anyway with a GRP tank, as I've read a few reports lately about grp tanks 'dissolving' with the latest fuels.

I'll not be using the mounting stud in future, so there'll be no load on it when in use. Do you reckon it'll be OK to use an internal sealant, or any other ideas about how I could seal it (externally around the stud perhaps?)

Other Bikes / CV carbs - how do they work?
« on: December 28, 2009, 07:34:52 PM »
Think they're called CV - they're the vacuum type carbs fitted to a '85 Yam XJ600. As the Yam forum continues to be pretty useless with answers I thought someone here may have experience of these type of carbs as I've never played with them before, being used to a cable opening the slider, not a vacuum.

I don't have an airbox for my project and wonder if not having one fitted will affect the carb vacuum. I know it won't run great but just want to fire it up briefly, but will it run at all like this?

I've never worked with vacuum carbs before - what lifts the sliders up so I can squirt some easy-start in to the throats whilst it's turning over? Presumably it's a vacuum in the top of the carb bodies that lifts the sliders, but where does the vacuum come from? There are no hoses that connect up to the carb tops as far as I can see.

Other Bikes / minimum wiring to run a bike (Yam 600)
« on: October 19, 2009, 03:53:02 PM »
Chaps, this is a Yamaha question, but I reckon it probably applies equally (and as the Yam forum are hopeless at communicating I'll ask here).

I've got a 1985 XJ600 project in the garage. This thing runs, but the PO has partly stripped it including pulling most of the wiring off (neatly, may I add).

I want to fire it up before heading into a full stripdown and wonder what's the minimum I'll need to hook up to get it to run? Not worried about charging or anything, just want to connect a battery and fire it up to hear it run.

cheers, Phil

CB650 / update on project

Few more engine problems still hassling me, so I'm thinking about my options, but in the meantime thought I'd show you where I'm at. Taken a long time, but I've got from this...

CB750 / 750 F1 master cylinder seals
« on: September 15, 2009, 09:16:32 PM »
I'm using a master cyl off a 750F1 on my 650. Need to replace the seals, but only have a manual for my 650 - can someone point me towards a diagram/instruction for replacing the seals on the F1, please?

many thanks, Phil

CB650 / Indicators
« on: September 06, 2009, 09:55:07 AM »
Hi, this ones got me wondering..

Can't get the indicators to work. No idea if they ever did, so what should I be checking to trace any faults?

The wire to the relay has 3 leads, but only 2 are used - that is the same as the manual shows. I've connected it the way it was when I stripped it down and nothing happens. Tried connecting the spare wire and as soon as the ignition is on you get a very rapid 'chattering' from the relay, and it does exactly the same if I just connect the relay across the battery, so that suggests the 'spare' wire (green in this case) is providing permanent 12v.

I would assume that when I switch the indicators on it should provide 12v to the relay but with a multimeter there is no voltage from the 2 leads that are feeding the relay, whatever way the switch is (left/right/off etc).

What checks can I make on either wiring or the relay?

(the indicators work when 12v is put through them so they are OK)

Thanks, Phil

Misc / Open / Miserable forums (NOT this one!)
« on: September 04, 2009, 12:05:16 PM »
Got another project - more about that later (it's not a Honda).

Anyway, I joined a forum, as you do. A few days ago I posted a 'hello, I'm new here' post to introduce myself, and a couple of days later a question about Clymer manuals, and no response to either of them....  ??? There are other topics coming and going, but nothing in reply to my post.

Makes you appreciate how friendly everyone is on this one.

Cheers all, Phil

PS, this ain't a "goodbye all" message - I'm not going anywhere, still got the CB650 in the garage

CB650 / moved my rebuild pages
« on: August 02, 2009, 05:38:02 PM »
Had to move my 650Z rebuild pages as the old geocities is closing in October.

Currently the LATER picture links work because they're on photobucket, but early ones are on geocities and don't work, so I'll move them over time.

If you've been following it bookmark this page now... http://cb650.web.officelive.com/

Tricks & Tips / brake caliper overhaul
« on: May 03, 2008, 04:10:02 PM »
Any recommendations for where to get calipers overhauled?

Particularly interested in the painting - I might try it myself but would probably make a mess of it with pasint in the threads and bores etc., so does anyone know someone who KNOWS what they are doing and can repaint the calipers? If it's not too expensive I might as well put the job out.

Or is it straightforward enough? And if it is, what's the best paint to use?

Oh, and where's the best place for new seals etc? DSS?

CB650 / leaky carb drains
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:32:36 PM »
Is this simple? At long last I'm close to firing up the CB650z, but on connecting up the fule today 2 of the carbs drain tubes are pouring out petrol. All I can think is that the drain screws aren't seating (they're tight) but is it is as simple as that or have I overlooked something else? I can't think what.

Otherwise it's close to firing it up now, all turns over OK, just need some fuel!

regards, Phil
