CB500/550 / Overflowing carbs
« on: April 19, 2023, 05:53:40 PM »
I've just wheel my bike out of storage for the winter for its first startup of the year. All good, especially after so much work of late. When I put it away in the late autumn I noticed 1 or 2 cards were overflowing, which I though I'd rectified by removing the float bowls and having a clean up.

Today all four were overflowing! I've had the carbs apart so many times over the last couple of years getting to the bottom of some irregular running and really thought they were fixed. It seems weird that all four are flooding now. I'm prepared to replace all four float needles and seats but wanted to check on here first to hear if anyone thinks something else may be the cause. The carbs are not high milage so they shouldn't be worn, however the bike has had patchy use over the 30 years I've owned it.

Any ideas?

Misc / Open / Insurance renewal time. WHy is it so much?
« on: March 27, 2023, 10:08:58 AM »
I've just received a renewal notice from Footman James for £206 covering my CB500 and a crappy 2002 Suzuki 125 runaround. I'm 61, got forever years no claims and 3 points SP40 (I didn't think the Suzuki could go that fast!). Both are on 2,000 mile annual totals.

It's the second bike that's doing it I think.

Can anyone recommend somewhere else to try for a better deal.

CB500/550 / Can anyone help identify these?
« on: December 19, 2022, 01:00:09 PM »
Slightly annoyed to find these two shims in my box of bits created when I stripped my front and rear CB500 K1 wheels right down for a hub reline and rebuild. I have no idea where they should go. External diameter 30mm, internal diameter 23mm.

I stripped and refurbished the speedo drive too and am wondering if that's where they came from but having looked at Trigger's photo at the bottom of this post: http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,20419.30.html there is only one shim behind the circlip and my speedo drive has gone back together just fine.

Anyone got any ideas? I can't see anything in the part list.

CB500/550 / Speedo Drive 1972 500 K1
« on: November 16, 2022, 12:42:17 PM »
As I've got my wheels apart for restoration I have a chance to refurbish my speedo drive. It looks OK tbh and I'm inclined to leave it alone. I guess the alternative is to thoroughly degrease and flush it and then repack with grease.

I've ordered a new speedo drive oil seal as recommended by Ken elsewhere (it doesn't appear in the parts list.)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224125083081

I guess my question is:

1) Should I leave it alone or clean it up?

2) What grease should I use to repack it? The current grease is very black

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Desperately Seeking!! / CB500 rear sprocket plate
« on: November 07, 2022, 09:43:52 AM »
I’m trying to find a new(ish) replacement rear sprocket plate 41211-323-000 or at least work out what the original finish should be.

All I’ve got to go on are some images from the CMSNL website. The plating doesn’t look like zinc, it’s much duller.

Does anyone have one or can anyone recommend somewhere where my one can be restored?

Many thanks

Dan

CB500/550 / Looking for a couple of rear wheel parts
« on: October 24, 2022, 04:33:25 PM »
Hi there,

Does anyone have a spare Sprocket Plate 41211-323-000 in original condition? Or at best do you know what the original finish was? Mine is caked in black paint but new ones seem hard to find.

Also I'm looking for the two large O (or D) rings on the sprocket side.

91262-323-000 92x2 O ring and 91261-323-000 79x2.6 D ring

CB500 K1

Any help would be much appreciated.

CB500/550 / Petrol tank breather
« on: March 10, 2022, 07:10:17 AM »
Hi there,

I have just had my tank repainted and replaced the filler cap with a David Silver pattern one. It looks like it isn't allowing the tank to breathe as I don't get flow from the petrol tap with it closed. One of the reasons I went for the replacement was it comes with pins that have circlips at the end, rather than the riveted originals which got damaged when it was removed for painting.

I'm tempted to refit the old one but before I do does anyone know how these things actually work, and is there any test or modification I could do to improve the situation?

The new one have a cross head screw in the center under the cap (its very stiff and I haven't managed to undo it), the original has a rivet.

Any tips would be welcome as always.

CB500/550 / Black number plate or yellow?
« on: December 14, 2021, 08:14:23 AM »
Now my 1976 registered K1 qualifies, I am thinking about whether I should switch the yellow rear number plate for a black and silver one.

Does anyone have any strong feelings about this? I used to like the fact that the yellow plate made the bike feel more ‘modern’, but that was over 20 years ago. Now I like the fact that it is so old!

First world problems. Merry Christmas everyone.

CB500/550 / Putting to bed for the winter
« on: December 03, 2021, 06:25:28 PM »
It's getting close to the time when I want to mothball my CB500 for the winter. I've never really done this properly before (apart from the occasional charge to the battery) and wondered what everyone's thoughts were on draining carbs/tank etc. especially with so much ethanol being in the fuel.

Years of lack of safeguarding finally caught up with me this year and it took ages to get to the bottom of some elusive carb problems but now I've got it running beautifully I'\d like to keep it that way.

Any tips would be welcomed.

CB500/550 / Recommended front tyre for 500 K1
« on: September 25, 2021, 07:05:29 PM »
Having just had a rear puncture I realised that my tyres and tubes are at least 20 years old and deserve attention. I remember trying to fit the widest tyres possible at the time, something that hasn't been too much of a problem in the 8,000 miles or so I've done since then but I've noticed that the front tyre is really close to the mudguard, you could just about get a fag paper between the tyre and the metal bar that is welded to the inside of the mudguard for the brake hose holder and it has slightly rubbed on the side of the tyre. (see pic).

I've always had really bad wobbles when taking my hands off the bars but have got so used to it I haven't done anything about it until now.

The tyre currently fitted is an Avon Roadrunner AM20 3.25H19.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent replacement that will give slightly more clearance to the mudguard and hopefully sort out the steering wobbles?

Like many previous posters on the forum, I've had trouble setting up by 1976 CB 500 K1 after many years or sporadic activity/storage. It seemed that no sooner I had fixed one problem then another would appear, to a point where I was beginning to seriously fall out of love with a bike I have had for over 30 years.

Well thankfully that's all changed now.

To recap - my previous posts here and on FB had many helpful suggestions, mostly focussed on float levels which I had reset and then reset again when I hadn't done them properly.

Originally I'd thoroughly cleaned the carbs (only 8,000 miles NOS) and replaced all the O rings with a carb refurb kit as some had suffered from ethanol corrosion. As that didn't help things much I also decided to replace all the brass in the carbs with a pattern cardb refurb kit from fleabay.

A bit better but that was probably because I had by then fitted Dynatec electronic ignition and reset the tappets and cam chain and balanced the carbs.

The problem was the bike would start immediately with no choke and run beautifully until it had warmed up, when it would struggle and hesitate throughout the rev range, possibly running almost OK ¾ to full throttle. The plugs would be sooty pointing to too rich a mixture. Also it would start to pop and crackle with unburnt gases igniting in the pipes. Not good. I really didnt want to mess with jetting and needle heights, it just wasn't worn enough and everything is 100% stock, the problem must be in the setup.

After reading the Honda carb manual from the download section of the group I realised how important the relationship between the needle and needle jet were, and that they should treated as matched pairs (which it doesn't say). Also the easy starting from cold was a clue, it was as if the choke was on when it wasn't. Well I only changed the needle jets for the pattern ones, deciding to leave the original needles in place as it was a bit of a faff to change them. Also, the main jet replacement O rings I had fitted seemed slightly bigger than the ones on the pattern main jets from the kit which possibly made them not sit far enough into the carb body as designed.

That was my mistake!

Having progressively worked through every aspect of the carbs and taken them off more times than I could ever admit, I retrofitted all the original brass (jets etc.) and hey presto, it was brilliant! A long 50 mile run yesterday confirmed that, until I was stuck in traffic in town, when it started misfiring again. Once back on the open road it felt great again but by now I'm looking to get this perfect. One plug was sooty, all the rest were fine. I looked at the 4 pattern needle jets that I wasn't using and noticed one was slightly different. The holes in it were microscopically bigger (see photo) and the pattern needle didn't slide down into it as far and cleanly was the other three. I had only retrofitted 3 out of 4 needle jets.

So for what I hope is the final time for a while, I whipped off the carbs (10 minutes - a new pb) and replaced the needle jet for the sootty plug cylinder with the original, making a matched set and completely back to factory setting set of carbs. 20 minutes to replace them (those connectors to the airbox are always a fiddle) and after another test ride she runs perfectly with a set of four healthy clean plugs afterwards!

Phew.

So who knows if it would have been OK if I had replaced the needles as well as the needle jets, but I'm not about to try and find out. This has been a long a frustrating slog but now the bike has never run sweeter.

Not sure what the moral to this story is but I wanted to share it in case it helps someone else who like me was getting lost in chasing problems.

p.s. The original needle jet is the one on the right

CB500/550 / Right handlebar switch UK 500 K1
« on: May 05, 2021, 12:42:52 PM »
Can anyone help? All I'm really after is the plastic bit that goes on the light switch (see photo) but looking at what's available online it seems to be mostly pattern switches without the P L H lettering having instead variations of . P L H or . L H

I'd gladly buy a complete unit if one can be found.

Unfortunately the scanned parts list on the group doesn't have the exploded diagram for that item for some reason so I'm not sure exactly of the correct part number. The best I can get to is 35300-300-621

The bike was registered in 1976 but is probably a few years earlier.

CB500/550 / Any CB500 owners in the South West?
« on: April 29, 2021, 11:02:08 AM »
I live in Shepton Mallet in Somerset and it would be great to meet up with some fellow CB500/4 owners in the area. It''s so rare to see another on the road but I'm sure there are lots hiding away in people's garages. Now the weather is better if anyone fancies a get together then please get in touch.

CB500/550 / CB500 K1 tank transfers
« on: April 24, 2021, 04:39:09 PM »
Looking to get my tank repainted. Are there any tank transfers around out there? Thinking of the pinstripes and safety decals as mine are currently hand painted and not original. Also quite a bit of petrol damage on the current finish so time to think of biting the bullet. I'm sticking to the plain black so will do the side panels at the same time, ever though they look fine. I'm guessing it's just standard plain black?
