If you do manage to dig it out I’d love to see a photo of the finish.

Desperately Seeking!! / CB500 rear sprocket plate
« on: November 07, 2022, 09:43:52 AM »
I’m trying to find a new(ish) replacement rear sprocket plate 41211-323-000 or at least work out what the original finish should be.

All I’ve got to go on are some images from the CMSNL website. The plating doesn’t look like zinc, it’s much duller.

Does anyone have one or can anyone recommend somewhere where my one can be restored?

Many thanks

Dan

Sorry Julie, I missed that one. I should have searched by part no. I've picked one up from ebay and am hoping Oddjob has a spare D ring. I'll look more carefully next time  >:(

Hi there,

Does anyone have a spare Sprocket Plate 41211-323-000 in original condition? Or at best do you know what the original finish was? Mine is caked in black paint but new ones seem hard to find.

Also I'm looking for the two large O (or D) rings on the sprocket side.

91262-323-000 92x2 O ring and 91261-323-000 79x2.6 D ring

CB500 K1

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dan

I don't agree about the casing being lacquered but they are 100% painted. Back in the day 5 wheel silver was the spray recommended as the best match. I've still got most of the original lacquer on my side cases but a couple of winters riding certainly aged them.

Back in the fold after the effects of the last couple of years left me without a bike .....

Just picked up this rather nice 500/4 .... always room for improvement and I probably paid a little too much but NOS Honda pipes and seat a few years back ... and well it looks nice :)

Cheers

Simon

CB500/550 / Cracked Brake drum repair
« on: May 18, 2022, 10:55:40 AM »
My original chromed rims and spokes were not in the best of condition and the rear hub had the usual badly cracked brake lining which made the back brake not safe to use and kept the bike off the road..  After hunting high and low for a long time for someone who not only said they could fix the hub but who I could also trust with my wheels. Then, unexpectedly, Google did its job and found a blog in which a traditional engineering shop only 20 or so miles from me, was writing about restoration of various motorcycles, including the relining of brake drums. A quick exchange of emails convinced me to hand my wheels over to Terry who was 100% confident that he could do the job, having done this numerous times before. We also discussed wheel building, using 316 stainless steel. Terry's workshop is very traditional with all sorts of equipment for practising the dark arts of engineering. There are also several wonderful motorcycles in various states of restoration, the work looking to be of a very high standard. Terry did my job in 4 days and I duly collected two immaculately rebuilt wheels with polished hubs. The rear brake lining had been custom machined for the hub and shrunk into place reinforced by the same adhesive that is used to glue brake shoes to their backing plates.

The man himself is Terry Ives, Stotfold Engineering, Biggleswade - look him up. He used to race Bantams and an Ariel Red Hunter amongst many other bikes. He tackles any engineering project, not just motorcycles. Pick through his blogs, some are quite entertaining, especially his views on BMW spoked wheel rebuilds!

I'm in exactly the same boat here. I think it's been like this for a very long time and doesn't seem to affect performance but I owe it to the bike and to safety to sort this out. Is Terry Ives still the best person to send this to or does anyone else have any other solutions I should follow up?

I'm assuming new brake drums are no longer available?

Let us know what you find. Any oilway that has become blocked will cause terrible damage if not cleared. Good luck!

Just by way of housekeeping, I've resolved the problem by fitting a new Avon Roadrider 3.25 x 19 tyre. Looks lovely and now plenty of clearance. Thanks for all the advise.

Check your original, it should have a small vent/hole in the centre plate.

They both have small vent holes in the centre plate, it's whether they do anything that is the problem!

CB500/550 / Petrol tank breather

Hi there,

I have just had my tank repainted and replaced the filler cap with a David Silver pattern one. It looks like it isn't allowing the tank to breathe as I don't get flow from the petrol tap with it closed. One of the reasons I went for the replacement was it comes with pins that have circlips at the end, rather than the riveted originals which got damaged when it was removed for painting.

I'm tempted to refit the old one but before I do does anyone know how these things actually work, and is there any test or modification I could do to improve the situation?

The new one have a cross head screw in the center under the cap (its very stiff and I haven't managed to undo it), the original has a rivet.

Any tips would be welcome as always.

My understanding is that to be period correct, b&w plates ceased some time in 1973? However DVLA does permit b&w plates for vehicles up to 1980. Personally I prefer to see things as being period correct, but guess whatever floats your boat will do.

I hear you. I think I'll keep it as is.
