Other Bikes / Handlebar mirror clamps
« on: April 03, 2020, 11:01:35 AM »

Hi all, this is a bit left field for this forum.......but I have a Yamaha XS2 and these things were fitted with clamp-on mirrors back in the day....no threaded perches on the switchgear until the next model.

I have a pair of correct mirrors and one clamp...... I need a simple handlebar clamp as per the ones in this photo....ideally from the UK or EU......you might imagine these would be an easy thing to find, but I have wasted a couple of evenings hunting and found nothing apart from Harley parts in the US and they use fatter bars so no good anyway.

Has anyone seen any such clamps around?.......Mick.

CB350/400 / CB400f Red Paint
« on: January 23, 2017, 08:18:35 PM »

Hi all.......does anyone know of a good match for the Honda Light Ruby Red Paint as used on the early CB400f?

I bought a touch up pot from RS Paints via Amazon, having used them many times before.....and it's miles off, almost pink by comparison; I'm very surprised because RS Paints are normally dependable for a perfect match.

I've tried email......no response thus far....so, anyone know of a good substitute? it's only for a few tiny chips.

CB350/400 / Pattern Rear Mudguard
« on: December 05, 2016, 02:23:48 PM »

Hi all....I bought a pattern rear mudguard for mt 400f via ebay....in brief, the mounting holes for the rear light bracket are some way off centre...far enough to be obvious.

I can return it, that's not the problem, what I need to know is, are they all the same no matter what the source?

I'll happily try one from DSS but not if it's going to have the same fault.

I'm amazed that anyone would go to the not inconsiderable trouble of manufacturing this part only to get such a fundamental part of the process so wrong!

CB750 / Dealer Decals
« on: June 07, 2016, 07:24:32 PM »

Hi all, I want to get a motorcycle dealer decal copied.....shouldn't be too hard....so I went to a web site that specialises in them and the lady who runs it told me that up until last week she could easily have done it, but the chap who made them for her has just given it up. :(

She came back to me later and asked if I do find anyone to make it could I pass her the details.

I think waterslide transfers are used by modellers etc and the manufacturer decals are mostly well covered......but if you want a rare one or a one off.......where do you go?

Does anyone know of a supplier who might be able to create copies from a photograph and measurements?

CB350/400 / Original Finish
« on: March 15, 2015, 07:31:51 PM »
Hi all, I just bought a 1976 CB400f, one owner since 1977 and less than 7,000m from new  ;D  ...... but unfortunately it was kept under a cover for the last umpteen years and the corrosion is fairly horrendous  :( .

Although I know my way round CB750K0s, GT750s and various others, it's a many years since I had a CB400f and daft as it may seem I've forgotten what the original finish is on some parts such as the wheel hubs and rear brake plate........can anyone enlighten me or is there a rivet counters reference website somewhere for the 400f?

Other Bikes / UK light switch on a US bike..Help!
« on: April 19, 2014, 04:53:54 PM »
Hi all, further to my last about fitting a light switch to a US sourced 1977 GL1000...I have turned up a nice set of UK handlebar switches which have the ON/OFF/Park functions I want.

Ignoring the parking light for now I would like to fit this switch.......but it has a pair of yellow wires which don't correspond to the US wiring harness.  A bit of research revealed this...... the 2 yellow wires are part of the charging system.
There are 3 yellow wires coming from the alternator, two go directly to the rectifier/Regulator, the third goes there too, but via a set of contacts in the light switch. This was, I believe, done to prevent overcharging the battery.

The US wiring seems to have done away with this set up....does anyone with a better understanding of wiring than mine know if I can safely ignore these two yellow wires and isolate them while using the useful functions of the switch?  I guess the same might apply to other 1970s Hondas.

Thanks...........Mick.

CB750 / Starter Motor
« on: April 04, 2014, 06:55:36 AM »

The starter motor on my K0 is a bit sluggish, it will start it when warm but it always feels like it's struggling even though the battery is good.  (The compression does feel surprisingly strong on the kick start)

I would like to find a nice clean starter from a low miler and just substitute it rather than fettle the existing one.....and there are loads for sale.

Problem is, most are from much later models.  Were any changes made to the starter motor which would prevent a K2 to K7 starter from slotting straight into a K0 crankcase?  Are the later ones better?.......were they improved over the years of production?  Are there better starters from different bikes that fit?  anyone got any knowledge of these please?

Other Bikes / Silver Crankcase Paint
« on: March 26, 2014, 12:47:54 PM »

In the USA there is a brand of paint, Duplicolor and a specific engine enamel 'Cast Coat Aluminium DE1650' that is a spot on match for Honda crankcase silver.

Example here.....scroll down to the engine pic.  http://www.classicgoldwings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4639

I bought a dozen cans of this stuff while I was in Florida a few years back only to discover no one would ship it back to the UK if I honestly declared what was in the parcel.....they are probably still in my mate's garage.

I've tried countless other paints available in the UK and never found anything that truly hit the spot.  Holts seem to own the Duplicolor brand in the UK and they don't stock this particular paint.

Has anyone ever found a genuinely good match that can be bought over here.....or better still a UK or EU source for Duplicolor DE1650?

Other Bikes / Fitting an ON/OFF light switch to a US import.
« on: March 20, 2014, 07:56:28 PM »

So...it's a SOHC Honda..of sorts, it's a GL1000 and although it's from the land of the free, it seems they're not even free to turn the headlight off.

Starting a bike with the headlamp burning is not great at the best of times, so I would like to fit an ON/OFF switch.  Honda make a neat little switch for the CB750K2 and earlier I think which clamps to the handlebar as a stand alone switch.....ideal.

The problem is, where on earth do I interrupt the circuit to turn off all the lights.....can it be done?  The headlamp, tail lamp etc are independently fused, not sure about the instrument lights......if I were to cut into the power feed it looks as if I would be turning half the bike off.

Has anyone done this on any US import....who could perhaps give me a pointer in the right direction please.

Other Bikes / CB450 Black Bomber Parts
« on: July 21, 2011, 07:57:13 PM »

Hi all, well after much searching for a Black Bomber I finally got one, and it's a bike I previously owned and sold seven years back.

I'm more than happy with it, but the downside is the guy who had it swapped the NOS speedo / rev counter unit I'd fitted.

Now it has a very average faded item on it..........so I'm in the hunt please for a NOS or mint CB450 Bomber speedo unit.

I'm also interested in any other Bomber parts.....anything considered.
