Thanks Bryan, will do.

Also I've got another old caliper with a damaged bleed nipple I'm looking to sort.
The nipple has been broken at the top but has a reasonable bit still sticking out to get hold of.
It's been soaking in penetrating oil for a while and I wondered whether sticking the caliper in the oven for a while would help to free the nipple before trying to loosen it - what do you think?

Cheers,
Andy

Other Bikes / Re: Pilot Jets

Dave,
Sounds like blocked hole on the jets.
I've just finished cleaning a set of CJ360T carbs in the same way with ultrasonic etc.
All jets and passageways looked clear but I had the same thing with the pilots and after careful poking with a strand of very thin copper wire and repeated blasts with carb cleaner the holes opened up.
At first the jets didn't seem to have a hole right through at all - luckily I had a set of aftermarket replacements (bought kit just for the O rings and gaskets) so could look at the shiny new one for confirmation and the hole clearly went through.
Good luck
Cheers,
Andy

Bryan,
Flare spanner did the job - thanks for recommending that as I wasn't familiar with these.
Tightened the bleed nipple a bit more and that stopped the leak there as well so looks good to go now.
And always good to have another shiny tool in the drawer!

Andy

Lovely bikes.
Mate had one back in the day - might even still have it is his garage but haven't seen him for a few years.

I've got some fiches for the CBX if you haven't already found a parts list - dated from 1982 / 1983 they show CBX550FC.FD.F2C.F2D which I guess may have been referring to faired / unfaired models etc maybe.
Happy to scan it if the old fiche machine fires up - it's a bit old, sits in a cold garage and links to an even older PC but so far hasn't died on me!
It takes a fair bit of time to scan, save and transfer images to pdf so if any specific areas are more urgent I can try and do these first to get you started.

Andy

« on: May 14, 2021, 06:48:04 PM »
Thanks again,
John - I think it may well be the same here as everything looks OK but the lean angle is way off and I'd guess it's had the bracket welded on incorrectly as you noted.
My concern is whether there are any more hidden bodges under the powder coating!

For the moment I've wheeled her to the back of the garage while I decide which way to go.

Dave - that's a really handy contact thanks. That's only a few miles from where I live and I'm sure they'll be useful for a few things besides the 400. I've got a CX500 turbo with a broken side stand bracket which I think can be welded but I really don't want to risk it being done badly and this guy sounds ideal (and local).

I'll mull over the 400 for a while and crack on with some other projects in the meantime. Been trying to sort out all the bikes and bits in the garage / sheds and make some sort of plan of which ones to do but indecision wins every time!

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks guys,
Johnny - The wheel is correct and it seems the shocks are a bit longer than standard which I guess would increase the lean rather than reduce it.

Dave - I think you may well be right about the repair. It's hard to tell as the frame had been powder coated by the PO and looks pretty good but if I look closely there are some wrinkles in the frame tube around the stand bracket so I guess it could have been repaired at some point.

Not really sure what to do with this bike as there are just so many niggles at every step. Essentially I think it was just not a great basis for restoration due to the number of non-standard or damaged / bodged bits. It also makes me a bit nervous that the powder coating may hide other repairs with no idea if they were done properly.

I enjoyed getting the engine together and running well but I'm not sure I want to put much more into this bike from here so I'll have to decide whether to carry on, stick her back in the shed, or sell / part out.

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Side stand
« on: May 13, 2021, 07:29:39 PM »
Here's another puzzle I'm hoping to solve...
The side stand fits and pivots fine but holds the bike pretty well vertically with no lean at all.
Nothing looks bent so I wondered if this is the correct stand for the 400 or something that's been swapped previously.

The stand is also quite a loose fitting onto the frame bracket and seems to have a spigot for second spring which made me think it could be the wrong one maybe?

Thanks Bryan,
That would scupper my plan - Sods law says that at least one of the damaged ones will be on that side!
I'll have a closer look in the morning and maybe I'll be lucky.

Julie, Bryan,
Thanks for quick response.
Here's a photo of the guard,

No obvious sign of a broken off bracket but I don't know where it would have been welded on.

CB350/400 / Front brake bracket

Another question on the 400 ...
On the CJ250 the final section of front brake hose is held in place by a bracket which is part of the front mudguard and I assumed this would be the same on the 400 but the mudguard on my bike hasn't got any bracket for this.
Is the bracket a separate part or have I got the wrong mudguard etc?

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Spokes
« on: May 13, 2021, 06:01:43 PM »
Hi all,
A question on old wheels spokes hoping someone can help with.
I've got a set of wheels with 'reasonable' chrome on the rims but with fairly rusty spokes.
As the bike they're going on is far from shiny I don't really want to re-spoke the wheels or end up replacing / re-chroming the rims either.
The back wheel has a couple of spokes that sound a bit flat but with a tweak tightened up so I think they can be adjusted as they should be.
On the front wheel there are a couple of bent spokes and some sounding flat so at least a couple will need replacing, the remainder probably look like they can be adjusted OK.
Ideally I'd like to just clean up the rims, replace any damaged spokes and then just clean them as well but I wondered what the view is on keeping old, rusty spokes with just a bit of replacement for damaged ones and tightening of loose ones - is that safe or is there a real risk of the spokes being weakened from age, neglect / rust?
Cheers,
Andy

Agree Roy,
On the GS1000 and the GSX1100 carb fitting was far and away my least favourite job.
Always feels like you're going to bend or damage something - or do yourself a mischief straining to get the bloody things on or off.

Thanks Arfa,
Really like them in yellow - might  well change the colour from orange on the 360 I will eventually get around to restoring. Mind you I don't plan anything like such an extensive restoration on that one.
Luckily I got the CJ's really cheap some years ago before eBay inflated the cost of everything and I'd also collected quite a lot of NOS stuff cheap as well.
It was great fun doing the bike - simple mechanics, only 2 cylinders etc. and still quite a lot of parts available at reasonable prices even on eBay. Benefit of working on an unpopular bike I guess.

I never had one in the past but a friend borrowed one when he stripped the sump plug on his brand new Superdream the day before a bunch of us set off for a trip to Devon. The poorly maintained borrowed CJ valiantly struggled up and down the country and never gave up so I've got a bit of a soft spot for them.
Now just trying to  refocus on getting the 400/4 finished before I get sidetracked yet again!
Cheers,
Andy
