As for E-vin 1783 to be the first to have finned oil filter is not to say it was the last non finned!
Steve Swan of US forum claims his from new CB750 E-vin46XX had a no finned filter.
Last sunday of August '69 I saw in Sweden 2 CB750 both with finned filter. E-vin about 23XX.
Ordered one next day from Honda dealer in town for my E-vin1638.
As for knowing this exact E-vin somebody once cited a service bulletin here or in the US forum.

Engine Vin on the  frame right side sticker!
Frame vin normally on left side.
Or is this one, the only one, with both vins the same?
What is the frame vin on this one?

Tempted to answer on this one too.
Varta accues in my BMW for years.Lately in the Fireblade too.
Tried an Odyssey this autumn, after a month only 11.7 volts!
Cost 3 or 4 times the Varta accu! The ad said it would take extreme abuse which indeed I did not give it.
But it was dated August '15 so maybe something has happened to it before I got it this summer?
Dealer would send it back and tell me. But I've had no reply now 2 month later.

Can only agree with K2-K6 and steff750.
There was no chain guard on my CB750 in '69.
When i had the chance to have one in hand I could not fine room for it!
Friend borrowed my Honda for a trip to Italy, on the condition he fitted a new Honda chain, and tightened it every time he refuelled.Say 300km.
Was absolute certain he could not run the life out of my Honda.
Had done the trip to Italy several times already. Had got a BMW750. Pleased me more to ride the long trips on a flat twin.
Can't remember why I forgot to check him by refuelling in Hamburg, but passing Hildesheim another 200km oil cloud came out of the Honda.
Cost him 21 litres of oil to do the remaining 1000km to reach Monza racetrack.
A German I had met in the isle of Man helped cover the hole with resin, which is still in place!
The loose bits were removed from the bottom pan when home again.
11 years later '82, the Honda engine had been in a Seeley frame some 3 years.
On the way to Misano Italy in mid Germany entering the motorway from refuelling no engine connection changing to 3rd!
Looking back chain laid snaking on the road. Link had apparently opened.
I always carried an extra chain on top of there luggage.
Had still not reached the age of O ring chains.
No damage to engine from a "loose" chain like Steff750 says.
An O ring chain came into use, when a CBX 750 engine was shoehorned into the Seeley frame  4 years later.

Come to think of it the story goes the Americans testing the prototypes had this very problem of engine damage from a loose chain on the overrun.

Hallo Zunspec. From me a wish long out!
If you talk to Mr Seeley again might you say hallo from a very happy Dane?
Haven't seen him since I bought frame 789 on my way home from the Silverstone GP '78.
Had intended to pass him on my way home from I.o.M. '79 but a petrol strike made me decide to go straight for the Dover ferry!
Indeed I was on a dream trip to John 'o Groets in glorious sunshine but feared to be stranded somewhere without fuel.
Year before we had been to Lands End from I.o.M.
Wife had decided we had to go because our youth time hero of the sixties"Mike the Bike" made a return to racing after 11 years!
Mike won on a Ducati! Phil Read eventually broke the engine of his Honda at least smoke came out as he passed us.

Sorry no had to ride pillion on friends BMW home.
Left all luggage on dealers workshop floor.
Only about 8-900 km still to ride.
Think we changed every tank fill.
Wait a fortnight for return in the Mini Cooper.
Took the dealer that long to get an engine.
But actually changing the engines was no big deal.
Had some practise from my first BMW an R69S.
That particular model had a vibrations problem!
After a couple of years a modified engine with a vibrations damper was introduced.
So I had 2 engines to swap every other year as they still had internal problems.
Since boyhood I had dreamed of a BMW. And indeed I still prefer it for long runs.
Wife too feel better on it for vacation trips to Italy.

In the day I reckoned some 15 km/litre. About 40 miles  to the gallon?
No speedo connected  due to a 250mm Fontana 4 leading shoe drum bake conversion.
Distance covered between gas stations on the German motorways on week end trips to spectate at Moto GPs of the day gave an idea.
And the CB 750 used more than than the same capacity BMW and had only 18 litres to the 24 of the BMW!
In a days riding I came further on the 50 BHP BMW than the faster Honda!
Speed difference minimised after a few years. The BMW dropped an exhaust valve up through Germany from Italy.
More or less outside a BMW dealer. It was just to order a 67 BHP 90S engine!
And off we went even in the first place with the original 32mm vacuum carbs to the 38mm Dell Orto.

About changing the outer plugs of a CB750.
When mine was new I ran 9er plugs in cyl. 2 and 3 to 8 in 1 and 4!
Just to get same colour on them.
We had no speed limits here in Danmark the first 4 years on the 750.
Was used to check plug colours from my mini cooper with 2 SU carburettors.
They are extreme easy to adjust.

Isn't there something in Hondaman's advise on clutch modification about lengthwise groves up to the holes inside to sort of catch oil for the hole?
Should be more of an improvement than just extra holes!
I've seen somewhere lately that very early CB750 did not have these holes at all?
And I wrote to Honda in the day asking for advice on that clonking. Dated Sep.16 1969.
Still have the answer a nice Air Mail postcard telling me to contact their distributor for my area to whom they have forwarded my letter.
Where of cause I had already been having bought the CB750 there, and they knew nothing. Was the first one they sold.
Really I do not remember anything were ever done.

Like said above Honda did apparently not supply complete engines.
Met a Sand Cast in Belgium for the 1971 GP.
He had had to wait a whole summer for a new crankcase!
My Danish registration paper says both frame and engine vins.
In the US forum HondaMan says his from new K2 had an older engine!
In the resent story about extra oil holes in clutch hub.

Just a thought. Starting uphill isn't it possible with 2 fore fingers on front brake and little and ring finger crumb on throttle thus keeping 2 feet firm on ground?
