CB500/550 / Lovely blue 550 F
« on: June 26, 2013, 08:34:00 PM »
Just like to say that whoever it was that had a run out around Wellington, Somerset on Tuesday, the metalic blue 550 was superb. You passed me on the way to Wellington monument and made me extremely ashamed that my K3 was languishing in my garage, totally neglected.
Note to myself; GET MY FINGER OUT AND MAKE IT ROADWORTHY!!!!!!!
Cheers, Nigel.

Hi Pete,
I know how you feel. I too had a bad `accident` in `79. My mate was riding my bike with me as a pillion and a police car pulled out on us. No blue lights and no siren but he was answering an emergency call and got off scot free. I had a broken left ankle, two fractures to my lower left leg, broken collar bone, jaw and numerous bruising all over, oh, and bad gravel rash to my lower back....my mate ended up underneath the police car with the bike. They buried him while I was in hospital.
It took until `98 until I even sat on a bike again. My first bike was a 550 F2, I now have a 550 K3 which has sat in the garage for almost 2 years due to a house move and renovation. I tried to sell it but have backed out of two sales after starting her up.
Don`t be too rash and sell up, the bad feelings will dull and they make you a more defensive rider.
In the end it`s your decision, whatever you choose it`s always the right choice.
Cheers, Nigel.

CB500/550 / Re: Ultrasonic cleaning??
« on: January 11, 2013, 06:17:48 PM »
Hi, Jimbo, I stripped the carbs on my K3 and ultrasonic cleaned them. A friend who`s a retired Honda mechanic set them up for me and the bike ran lovely. It then stood for over 12 months (house move etc), I tried starting it but it wasn`t having any. A squirt with carb cleaner and fresh petrol and she`s running as good as ever!!!!
My mate, the ex Honda mechanic says that he wouldn`t have stripped them, just used carb cleaner and emptied the can while it was running just to make sure!!
Just my twopenny worth.
Cheers, Nigel.

Yes, Bob has done quite a few things for me, both on the Honda and on my Matchless. I usually drop the items off at his house in Stafford and give him a ring a couple of weeks later. The quality of his chroming is as good as if not better than other companies that I`ve used in the past. Just DON`T use a well known firm in Hull, very costly and rubbish at listening to instructions!!!
Cheers, Nigel.

I`ve fitted taper bearings and there was still a slight weave at speeds, I`ve put it down to the tyres. Saying that, I`ve also fitted bar end weights and that has taken out a lot of it.
Just my pennyworth!

Hi Jean,
lovely bikes. I had a 1976 GL1000 a long time back, wished that I`d kept it. Don`t worry about your English, I`m sure that it`s much better than most members French!!

Hi St Peter, I`ve a set of these which I bought thinking that they`d fit my `77 K3, which I`ve been told they won`t. I advertised them on this site but had no takers, they`re still in the original packaging and sitting in my garage if you want them....and you don`t have to wait 2 weeks for delivery :D Message me if you`re interested.
Cheers, Nigel.

Liked the `slipped one in` of the Beastie, I had one 10 years ago in reddish yellow cocktail. Amazing bike, a bit on the heavy side but when on full chat it sounded lovely!! Almost painted my K3 in that colour I liked it so much! Had to sell it, I wouldn`t have still been on this earth if I hadn`t  :-[
Keep on with the cafe racer project, I`ve some rearsets and flat bars for sale on fleabay, finishes on sunday. I gave up on the idea, everyone told me that the K3 was too original to go and chop and change it!!

Back to the replacing the rotted out silencers from earlier, there are `universal Dunstall style mufflers` advertised on fleabay. £60 each with £7.95 p+p, p+p includes up to 2000kg so if you want 4 silencers it`s still only £7.95. If funds weren`t so tight I`d give one a go!!

Sorry Tomb, it was only said tongue in cheek. No offence taken hopefully :-\ I was only wondering if anyone out there knew of anyone willing to give it a try.

I agree with MM, £400-£500 max, as I only paid just over that for the bike! Stainless would be better but the manufacturer would be on a loser as it would outlast standard steel systems and we wouldn`t be ordering anywhere near as many ;)
How about a polished stainless rear mudguard?! Who`s up for giving it a try and making one?? How about you Tomb, plenty of experience in fabricating?

I had an advisory on the last M-O-T about `excessive` noise with the original 4-4`s on!!! It passed ok with no advisory with a Marving on!! This system was almost twice as loud, so I swapped back to the original 4-4 ( complete with welded on patches) as I consider it to look more balanced than the 4-1. Saying that my first Honda was a F2 and I loved the look of that bike! Can`t wait `til someone reproduces a replacement....at a decent price.

No, you`re all wrong. It`s my fault!! I insured the bike yesterday, going to M-O-T it next week, ready to use and abuse it all summer!! Should have known better, Wimbledon is on!!
Sorry lads (and lasses).

Lovely bikes, Espescially love the Harley based one....and the XS650, even the Scoot. How do you get away not using a front mudguard?? Unless you`re in the States!

I`ve spent too long riding in the rain, and falling off....painful hips and knees now plus I`ve spent a fortune on powdercoating, chrome, paint etc to ruin it all with a good soaking!!
Not long sold my old Matchless `cos I didn`t ride it as often as I`d have liked, don`t think that I`ll go down that route with the Honda though. It`s always been my favourite bike....ever!!
