OK, just looked there, I know nothing about that so here is a photo.

This is how it links to my coils,  there  is also one other wire, a ground, that connatcs to the frame under the seat.
The box does not open, it is a sealed unit.
It does not itself connect directly to the points.

What is this bit  linked to the Coils?

It was zip-tied under the fuel tank, at the rear, under the rubber cusion and the wires go to each coil.
Is it a genuine part and should it be under the tank? It works, as in the bike starts but as I am re-wiring it with a new loom I want to know what it is and where it should live.
Thanks.

Should I lacquer the patches after painting? If so, what do I use?

I just did not  know what to specifically look for.

Check where the wires in the loom go to, from memory red/white goes to rectifier and red to ignition switch or fuse box depending on year.
Let me know and i will tell you what to connect where, bike would be helpful as well, and please dont say its in sig details, i like most never look there!

CB350/400 / Starting Magnetic Switch connection to main loom
« on: March 11, 2023, 03:00:27 PM »
Starting Magnetic Switch has a Red & White cable and Red Cable coming from it. I have just replaced the wiring loom and the new loom has a Box Connector on it. I am sure it is for this cable, however, the old loom had this cable on a 'double bullet' connection. This looks like a patch job to me.
I made a patch with spades to fit the box, the bike started. What I need is a new cable that will fit into this Box connector. I can only presume it is a sealed connection due to the   high voltage passing through it so I don’t want to use the patch I made as the spades could easily touch or arc. Does anyone know where I can get one?

Mostly it is where nuts and bolts have been, as an exaample, I have removed the rear indictors and under there the paint could do  with a touch up. Other areas are under the tank for sure. Any part of the frame that is visible that needs a patch would be small, not larger than 1cm I would say.

Not a fussy job just a remedial job where required.

Some dicey looking wiring there! But a work in progress of course!

I am tempted by a new loom...  ;D

CB350/400 / Right Hand Ignition Coil Replacement.
« on: February 02, 2023, 04:01:01 PM »
Last year I replaced the Left hand Ignition coil and that was easy. This year, I am replacing the Right Hand one (as you sit on the bike). I have a problem, the only coil I could find was ‘aftermarket’ and designed for fitting on either left or right side. This Coil does not look like either of my coils but it is described as for the CB400f.

Specifically, the issue I have is the wiring, the new coil has a Positive and a Negative terminal on it and it comes with a cable that has one Yellow and one Black wire. My right hand coil connects a Black&Yellow wire to Black and a Blue wire to Blue. The black one must be missing the normal connector as it has been soldered onto the Black&Yellow one.

I need to know which terminal (on the coil) to connect the nice new Black and the new Yellow wires to and then where to connect them vis-a-vis the Black wire and the Blue wire. As ever, pictures are more helpful, please see below.

CB350/400 / Splice HT Leads
« on: October 02, 2022, 12:14:43 PM »
Should I splice my #3HT Lead with this?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/NGK-J-1-Racing-Cable-Splicer/dp/B0018JXIXI
Following on from my carb rebalance I found #3 cylinder was not firing. All other are ok and by process of elimination I could get #3 to fire, proving my coils are both ok. I removed the coil and shortened the lead, #3 now gets hot on the downpipe but still not as hot as the others so I suspect the HT lead could be an issue.

I don't want to replace the coil just yet since it is not broke but the HT cables are sealed units, so would a splice be a good option?

Also, this is the left coil, same side as clutch lever, is that meant to fire #2 and #3?

You mention that when you put No. 4 lead onto No. 3 plug the exhaust then got hot. Is there a chance that it was incorrectly fitted in the first place?  Have fun, it's a great hobby for keeping the old grey matter active. Mike.
I don't think so, since the spark is is 'a redundant spark' I expected it to 'work' at the other end of the stroke to at least prove the fuel is getting through. So I think the leads aare all in the correct order. I just swapped them as a logical elimination step.

I will take the tank off again, tomorrow, and follow the leads to make sure they are   #1and#4 and   #2and#3.. If they aare not, then it needs new cables as they are not reaching anywhere else.
PS, I am having a good time doing this and learning.
