Need to replace 3 exhaust valve guides, set about this today but had a disaster. Warmed the head up till it was nice & hot & had had the new guides in the freezer overnight, made a drift which is probably where I made the big mistake as I made it to drive the new guide on the flange, needless to say broke the flange. So before I attempt again a little wisdom would be appreciated. I have remade the drift so that it now sits on a small shoulder a little above the flange, hopefully you can see this in the photo's & should I be using any lubricant to help the guide in, if so what. Bit of advice guys; I'm rebuilding the engine of my 500 four after a complete strip down & have a bit of a problem with the kickstart assembly. When I assemble the shaft & other bits into the case it's secured with a small (about 12mm) circlip which sits in a very shallow grove only .25mm deep. So I get it assembled the jiggle the shaft about a little at which point the circlip pops off & most of the bits spring off the shaft. Am I missing something or is it just a crap design?
It's driving me nuts HELP please

Well after much pondering & reading up, this morning I've bitten the bullet & ordered a set of Davida vacuume gauges in preparation for syncing the carbs on the 500.
Expensive compared to some offerings but I only want to buy once, may try them out on the xj900 for a practice.

A few bits arrived from the states today from www.4into1.comOrdered on the 7th arrived on the 15th Total cost was £52.06 & no import charges, out of interest I did a comparison with David Silvers, total cost £83.16 £31.10 diferance, makes you think doesn't it. Guess what I'm doing this weekend? Conrad

Well that's the fuel hose's replaced, tried to do it in situ but you were right mickwinf I had to take the carbs off.
Discovered that two of the air box to carb rubbers had splits in them so that's another few days waiting till a new set arrives. Also noticed that there is no drain hose from the air box this looks to need 12mm bore hose, can anyone confirm this before I order some.
A question for when I come to replace the carbs, should the air box rubbers be attached to the air box or to the carbs before refitting, I ask as it was rather tight getting the carbs out.

Well after3 months of waiting I will hopefully be collecting my new bike tomorrow, a 1975 CB500 four. So a few questions:-
How do I tell which model it is? & from a mechanical point of view does it make any difference when buying spares?
The tyres on it are unused but will be at least 5 years old (Avon RoadRunners) should I replace them? I feel I probably should but what do others think?
Oil? Back in the day would have been mineral oil or should I use a semi synthetic. I have found a good price on Shell Advance SX4 15w 40 (mineral oil), as I understand the low end of the viscosity range is needed on cold weather which I won't be using the bike in, so will 15 40 rather than 10 40 be ok. What oils do other use?
I'm sure I will have plenty more questions in the coming weeks, will try & post some photos tomorrow.
Thanks Conrad

Hi guys, looking for a bit of advice, I've been offered a CB500 four 1975 which I belive to be a genuine UK bike, has about 41000 on the clock, has had the frame & the singing arm stoved, looks as if the engine cases etc. have been painted & generally looks very clean & tidy. It also has a new set of genuine pipes which I'm told were the last available set in the UK at the time. There are a few little minor issues, more tidying up which I would need to sort, the only real issue is it has mag alloys fitted which look ok but I would want to return to spoked wheels which would potentially look to be quite an expensive job The bike was rebuilt by a guy who passed away about 4/5 years ago, he never road it & it has been stood since then. Also don't know exactly what was done to it during the rebuild. The chap selling it for the widow is currently stripping & cleaning the carbs as the petrol that was in has gone off, so I will be able to hear it run & give it a try on a short private road before making a decision.
They are asking £2500 for it and have said they won't take less, does that sound a reasonable price? Looking at the price that is being asked for some basket cases on eBay I would think its probably fair.
Sorry for rambling on & thanks in advance.
Conrad
