CB500/550 / Re: brake pads« on: October 22, 2020, 08:16:27 PM »Anyone tried SBS ceramic pads, got them on my CB1300 and they are fantastic, great bite, don’t wear the discs like sintered and very little dust. Work well from cold as well unlike sintered and resist fading unlike organic. Fairly sure I checked that SBS make them for the 500/550 but could be wrong. Good to know Ken, just changed mine for ENC in an attempt to stop bloody brake squeal which didn’t help. One of these days I will lose the squeal. 63

Thanks for all the replies and physics theories, interesting reading
All sorted now by rebalancing carbs and resetting idle screws Ticking over lovely again 👍👍👍 64
CB500/550 / Revs rising on tickover since fitting new fuel tap -weird« on: October 20, 2020, 12:00:05 PM »
Just fitted new fuel tap and did some fiddling with float heights
Now when I put bike on side stand revs are rising to around 2k Anyone any theories? 65
CB500/550 / Odd fuel overflow from carbs« on: October 13, 2020, 01:46:42 PM »
I have a very slight drip from the fuel tap when in off position and I am getting 3 carbs that will do a slight overflow overnight. (New tap on order from DSS)
What is weird though is if I leave the tap in the on position this doesn’t happen. Am curious to figure out what is going on here. My daft theory is that if the tap is on there is enough liquid head to snap the floats closed but if there is only a slight drip going through the floats are not closing fast enough to seal the flow. I have checked the float levels using my manometer tube and all are fine. Can’t get my head around this and wondered if anyone has any thoughts. Bit fed up of going in to a fuel smelly garage each day😡😡 66
CB500/550 / Front brake hose sizes question« on: September 23, 2020, 12:35:48 PM »
Am thinking of making up some stainless front hoses
Does anyone know the various thread fitting sizes/threads. There are 2 hoses one goes from Res to union and has 2 banjos but not sure of bolt/banjo size the other goes from union to Union to brake pipe connector and has a banjo at one end a a straight fitting to the pipe connector Bike is a K0 USA model and parts list quotes different part no’s for the US and European models but don’t know if that makes any difference to the fitting sizes though 67

One thing I would like to add.....
I know how frustrating it can be chasing problems like this, I spent weeks chasing around with an issue that I thought was down to air leaks (but wasn’t in the end). My bike had never idled very well and was always quite and to start despite having rebuilt the carbs and changed the carb brassware. In the end I got so fed up I bought a set of refurbished carbs from Gerben. Ok they cost 300 but I got 95 back in part ex for my old ones. Result bike starts first kick, idles like a dream. Sometimes it just pays to have a professional service the carbs that uses good quality brassware was my take home Mine is a 500 by the way with 069A carbs not a 550. 68

CB500/550 / Re: I need a carb sync - Anyone in North London?« on: September 12, 2020, 02:13:10 PM »Update: Having eliminated air leaks then it may we’ll be an issue with the advance mechanism, have you thought of hooking up a strobe timing light I think that would show if the timing was jumping around 71

REMEMBER DONT OVERTIGHTEN THEM IN CASE YOU SPLIT THE RUBBERS 72

You need 8mm narrow band stainless ones. I got mine from Inox Fasteners in Southampton http://www.inoxbolt.co.uk/zen/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=475_498 http:// 73
CB500/550 / Re: I need a carb sync - Anyone in North London?« on: August 20, 2020, 08:50:40 AM »Small update: This was exactly the same as mine, I sprayed carb cleaner all over and didn’t show a leak but there must have been one there. I replaced the clips with thin stainless jubilee clips. Word of warning is not to over tighten the clips or there is a danger of the clips splitting the rubber. I am convinced you have an air leak. One thing you can try is when bike is running get hold of the carbs and pull/push them up and down. Give em a really good waggle around 74
CB500/550 / Re: I need a carb sync - Anyone in North London?« on: August 15, 2020, 08:27:18 AM »Update of the day: This def sounds like a fuelling issue not an electrical issue. As I said check for air leaks very carefully 75

Are you positive you don’t have an air leak between carbs and head. That would also cause similar problems. Try spraying carb cleaner around the joints when running. I had exactly the same tickover issues with revs suddenly rising and fixed it with new inlet rubbers. I also used jubilee clips (thin stainless ones) as opposed to the old Honda clips as even the replacement ones I got (not aftermarket ) from DSS were no sealing well.
From the sound of it this is more likely the problem |
