CB750 / Crankcase Breather
« on: November 07, 2014, 02:21:39 PM »
It looks like the bottom half of my crankcase breather filter is completely missing. This is the one that is located directly beneath the battery box. Two pipes are connected to the cap which effectively go direct to the atmosphere. I can't seen to track down a replacement bottom part. Two questions first one is does it matter? The second one is are there alternatives to the OE filter?

CB750 / Final Drive Front Sprocket
« on: November 07, 2014, 01:56:48 PM »
The final drive chain was going tight/loose when the rear wheel was turned. I took the chain off and the front sprocket cover for inspection. The front sprocket was loose and the securing bolt was less than finger tight. It looked like the PO replaced the sprockets and chain. There appears to be an additional washer (the one pictured nearest the sprocket) I am guessing that this washer has actually come off the rear wheel. Without this "spacing washer" it is impossible to tighten the sprocket on the shaft enough to prevent some lateral movement. The manual refers to a 2 bolt lock plate but the sprocket couldn't accommodate this. Has anyone got any thoughts.

CB750 / Front Fork Oil Leak
« on: May 21, 2014, 12:08:19 PM »
I never noticed any problem with the oil seals on the forks until last Friday. Went for a 20 mile run on what was a fairly warm day. Parked up in the garage, the next day I noticed about a tablespoon of what was very clean oil under the front forks. The opposite fork also had oil running down the fork leg. If I compress the forks I do get a thin film of oil appear. The forks are in good condition with no pits or roughness. I can see no obvious damage to the seals. Any advice?

Misc / Open / Back to Motorbikes after 30 Years
« on: March 05, 2014, 08:17:05 PM »
It has been 30 years since I last rode a motorcycle the wait is now over. Took the bike in for an MOT which it passed  :)

I have to admit being slightly apprehensive but it turns out that riding a bike is like ... well riding a bike, you never really forget. Only one slight panic when I got stuck in traffic, the visor started steaming up and I couldn't raise it  :( didn't spot the lifting tab for the visor was offset on the left. At least I didn't fall off which would have been embarrassing as the local school was just turning out.

The bike felt good. Not sure that the front brake is as efficient as it could be. I have changed the brake fluid and everything looks OK brake pads look to have a lot of wear left on them they could be new. It just seems to lack bite. Back brake is excellent. Got a bit of cam chain rattle but engine pulls really well.

I have spent a some time cleaning and fettling. Had some bits painted and powder coated replaced some worn parts. Replaced plugs, points, condensers and plug caps and it has been fun all the way.

Looking forward to a long hot and glorious summer.

CB750 / Front Brake bleeding
« on: January 22, 2014, 03:37:42 PM »
I am slightly confused about the front brake on my K7. I need to change the brake fluid and the bleed nipple, well it doesn't have a nipple just a hole. I am sure you can imagine my disappointment  :(

I ordered up a new one for a K7 from DS but it won't fit, mine appears to have a narrower shaft. Looking in the Haynes manual the calliper looks different I am guessing that the brake design changed at some point unless mine is non-standard.

Have I just got the wrong part or is there something different about the brake? Pictures are of the the new one supplied by DS and the calliper.

CB750 / Exhaust and Centre Stand Removal
« on: January 15, 2014, 02:27:59 PM »
One of the exhaust studs sheared off on my K7 when I was attempting to remove it. Four came out with the stud three actually undid as they should. It is the outer stud on cylinder 4 that sheared so at least it is easy to get to. It sheared with only about 2 mm left protruding so there isn't, enough left to get a grip on. Can anyone offer advice on the best way to fix this.

I was also considering removing the centre stand to get it powder coated. I am now wondering whether it would be easier just to paint it on the bike instead. Do the centre stands usually come off easily or is it a big hammer and blow torch job.

New Member Introductions / Hello - this is my story
« on: December 19, 2013, 10:23:30 PM »
I would put it down to mid life crisis, apart from the fact I reckon I am past the midway point  ;D

I haven't ridden a bike for over 30 years but decided it was time to revisit my youth. After looking around for a bike that would need some light restoration I finally bought a CB750 K7. The bike has had one owner since new and 24,000 miles on the clock. It hasn't been on the road for 2 years so it need some fettling to bring it up to good condition.

It's early days yet, I have had some bits powder coated and have given other parts a good clean. Got the engine running but cylinder number 3 doesn't want to join the party at the moment. Drained the tank and the carbs and put fresh fuel in there, 4 new plugs waiting for new points and condensers to be delivered. Got a new air filter to fit.

Haynes manual turned up today that should help  :)

Got some new tank trim from DS but it won't fit. It is asymmetric in section when the original is symmetric. Sent photos to DS and they have offered a refund if they are returned. Looks like I need to hunt down another source for the trim.

The plan is to have it all finished and ready to go for the spring.
