I think I'm just worried it's going to leave me stranded down the bottom of a hill, I can only go downwards from my place

I'm with Roo here, run it get the pistons  to settle in a bit, it's amazing what some warming and cooling down of an engine can change.
If your dynamic timing is set a few miles will help you balance the carbs with more certainty as and when.

Get it out on the road mate, you’ll know what needs sussing when you ride it or at least a starting point. Don’t run it on the bench it’s too hot and it’ll just knacker yer liners, get her out on the road and give it varied conditions. That’s the better way although takes longer than you want. I’ve not run mine for ages waiting on other bits for that reason. Seats ordered and away, just waiting on my paint slot and she’s done.
I’m dying to tune her up but the risk is too great after going to all this work to bugger it up just when you’re within inches of her being done, done.

Sorted the leak out!

Before I tentatively try a road test should I try and fine tune my carbs or just take it down the road running rich as it appears to be?  I've got a Morgan Carbtune but I'm conscious of running it for too long statically when it's on new pistons and a rebore.

Thanks Bryan and Ted. Im not sure which model mine is. VJMC did the certificate for the registration and they call it a 1976 CB550K. I assume that this equates to the K3 parts book although I cant see any difference in the gaskets/O rings etc between the three CB550 parts books; I assume it doesn't matter. Ill have a trawl through the old posts using search over the next week or so. I have redgrease that I used for reassembling the carbs which I will use on the O rings so thanks for the tip there.

I'm considering doing my own paint job too, will spraymax 2k go over any aerosol base?  What kind of mask is needed to be safe?
Really you need an air fed mask to be safe. My mate sprays with loads of ventilation and a Gerson disposable carbon filter mask .. personally I only use an air fed one.
I would only use decent aerosol base coat from an auto paint supplier. They are not mega expensive and you are guaranteed to end up without a paint reaction. RS bikepaint call it COB (clear over base) but their aerosols are an  absolute rip off compared with ones from a paint factors

Ofcourse, but I, on the European continent, am not prepared to spend € 80,- on a bulb, unless I am absolutely sure it's an overall improvement. Until then I will remain satisfied with my 60/55W H4 in the H4 reflector, the bike came with. Saves me the job to create enough room for the ventilator well known brands have. Personally I don't need anything brighter as already now reflecting road signs irritate me.

Here's a cheaper one that will fit your reflector, and it's CE certified:-

Motorbikes TecnoGlobe's LED bulbs are CE certified and use CSP Led technology to provide 300% better lighting quality than conventional bulb.

I do like a daft joke - I forwarded it on to my mate who is a Golfer - I suspect he thinks I'm daft enough to try it on a hot engine. ;D ;D ;D
