Is there a modern day alternative to the big and bulky system for the CB 550 four? You'll have to excuse my novice question this is all new to me. Thanks.
-
There are one piece electronic reg/rec units available but the slightest hint of wrong wiring and they are, as my uncle would have said, crodged (or knackered as they say now)
-
Is it best to try and get an old/new/used one or get the newer type and get it professionally wired up? Thanks for the info.

Hi Spanner,
DSS (David Silver Spares) sell an all-in-one Regulator/Rectifier unit, which should just bolt on directly to you bike... via one loom plug. I had one on my CB750K2 & it worked a treat. You will be able to remove the regulator unit... just tape up the 3 wires (black, white, green) & stow them safely out of harms way.
Job done.

Lobo, did you find the acid leaked out of that battery?
-
When I click on it, the picture opens the correct way up!

What's with the 13A fuse?

What's with the 13A fuse?
I know. Shouldn't there be a 6mm screw in there? :)

I bought an Electrex RR24 for my 500 when I restored it. That was 11 years ago, and it's been fine so far. They're currently £78, so slightly more than the DSS item.
-
...yea yea yea, I'm mortified. But it was a 1/2 way house fix prior to getting OEM parts / set up ... which is where the bike is now. All luverly..
But ya should have seen it when I got it....
-
£78? I bet there is something much cheaper around.
I had a Kwak triple. I remember the price exactly back in 77. £3.10 plus vat for points, 3 off. Mate worked at a Colt (Mitubushi) dealers and I got them for 99p.

Thanks for that. That's another bit of the jigsaw complete.

Hi again,
Bit of a brain fart - you'll only have a redundant green from the old regulator. The remaining Black & the White from the old regulator will connect into your new all in one unit.
I'm sure you've been keeping an eye on Nim's thread

Sorry another amateur question from me, I have all the electrical system on the engine. Starter, points, alternator. I have a loom but as I'm doing a bobber/chopper I'm not using indicators so I'll have cable spare. The question I have is, am I right in thinking all I need is the rectifier/regulator and I'm good to go?? I must be missing something. :o
Thanks.
-
You don't need the flasher relay, grey wire to the handlebar switch, light blue, orange, light blue /white and orange/white wires plus a load of spare green wires to the indicators.
-
So if I get the modern version (above) and wire it up I'm good to go? Surely it can't be that easy. Well easier than I though. [attachimg=1] I'm gonna be cheeky and ask can someone alter this pic and put in the new regulator/rectifier. Thanks.

Ok Spanner,
Assuming you have the DSS type Regulator / Rectifuer unit.
Starting with the old REGULATOR at the top of your picture & working vertically down...
Disconnect the BLACK wire, and connect it to one of the BLACK/ RED spades of your new unit.
Disconnect the WHITE wire, and connect it to the other BLACK/RED spade of your new unit
Disconnect the GREEN wire, insulate it, and tape it up out of harms way.
Now your old RECTIFIER...
Disconnect it from the bike via the large loom plug, ie 3x YELLOW, RED/WHITE & GREEN
Plug the bike loom connector into your new Reg/Rec unit.
Job's done.
(if for some reason you don't have the loom plug simply connect the YELLOWS together (any order), the GREENS together and the bike RED/WHITE to the new unit RED. Ensure all these connections are soundly insulated & stowed securely.

Thanks for that. I appreciate you taking the time out to explain. Nice one.

Is a cb550 rectifier/regulator the same as a cb500 one? Done a bit of research on the web and it says it is. Just need clarification. Thanks.
-
Yes, it is, and the same as the sohc 750s
-
Thanks. Found a new one on Fleabay for a good price.
-
Gents, is this ok to use? Thanks.

Hi again Spanner,
The eBay listing is only for a rectifier I think... ie the bit that RECTIFIES the 'wiggly' alternating voltage into something more palatable for the battery... which likes DC.
You then need something else to REGULATE that voltage value... so you don't boil your battery... ie you'd further need a Regulator.
Which is actually how these old Honda's did it... ie 2 separate units.
I thought you were after a Regulater / Recifier all-in-one unit... if so this isn't for you. At the bottom of the same eBay page is a combined unit however, and labelled as such. It'll likely have a couple of extra wires to it... a black & a white.
But in answer to your question "is this OK to use" I'd have to say yes.... but with a Regulator.
Hope this helps,
Simon

Thank you. Now I know where I stand and what I want. A plug and 2 extra wires then. Thank god I didn't buy that one. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
