At least with the internet you can keep in touch and ask anything that comes to mind while you're recovering. Take care, hope you feel back to top form soon.

Yep, the spindle needs to come out to release the Speedo drive.

If you're taking the head off to do it, consider spending a bit more and find an engineering firm that uses Wurth "Timeserts" which are far superior to helicoils for strength and heat dissipation

CB350/400 / Re: Kill Switch 400/4
« on: November 10, 2020, 02:55:09 PM »
Aside from your mates overtaking you and activating your kill switch it has always baffled me as to its purpose.

I do not recall any of my Mopeds,Scooters or British Bikes having such a device though my memory could be defective. That said if its fitted I want it to work!
The reason was safety, probably to satisfy the U.S. market. If you came off the bike and the engine stayed running it was a fire risk or the engine could rev uncontrollably due to the carbs flooding. If the bike was down on it's left side, you couldn't turn it off as the ignition switches at the time were fitted below the front of the tank, so it gave somebody an easy way to kill the motor.

Going off memory on the adjustment screw, you set it by screwing it out until the back pad touches the disc, then slacken it off until there’s a 3mm gap, I used to just slacken it until it stopped dragging on the disc
Apart from the fact the gap should be 6 thou or whatever the metric equivalent is!

Certainly would NOT jam the clutch lever in, that will obviously compress the clutch springs, and over time weaken them, and the cable would be permanently under tension, again not good, they are designed to be used briefly to allow smooth pull away and gear changes.

CB500/550 / Re: brake pads
« on: October 23, 2020, 12:24:02 AM »
I really don't get what issue people have with brake squeal on the old SOHC"s, many of them did it when new, I tend to investigate if the squealing gets less or stops, a sign to me that all is not well. Often traced to a swing arm pivot or pad stiffening up and needing stripping, cleaning and greasing where needed. Plus, the squeal is letting others know your brakes are working, one more chance of being noticed by blind drivers!

But you will have to remove the oil filter and sump pan to get it out with the head on, and the carbs.

Humour / Toilet rolls anyone?
« on: October 12, 2020, 07:52:03 PM »
SHAME ABOUT THE TOILET ROLLS!!!

To try and get shoppers to return, a local supermarket has introduced a number of new initiatives to make the customers' shopping experience more enjoyable, despite having to wear a face-mask.

On entering, the smell of freshly-baked bread awakens your senses as soon as you step into the store and when you reach the milk aisle, you hear the sound of cows mooing gently in the background, along with the scent of freshly-mowed grass.

When you reach the fruit and vegetable rows, the smell of freshly-squeezed orange juice is followed by a cooling mist, giving the impression that the produce has been freshly picked.

In the meat section, there is the aroma of charcoal-grilled steak, along with fried onions; and when you reach the egg shelves, you hear chickens clucking and cackling, like they are having a party.

However, I've decided to get my toilet rolls elsewhere!!!

CB350/400 / Re: CB400F2 - front brake parts what's missing?
« on: October 12, 2020, 06:29:45 PM »
The split pin holds pad B into the caliper body. The pin goes through the pad hole at the top, and through the hole in caliper B, then the ends spread. The reason for the swinging caliper design was at the time Lucas Hurling had a patent on opposed piston calipers, so Honda came up with this solution.

CB750 / Re: CB750F1 Rear Disc Brake
« on: October 09, 2020, 07:09:31 PM »
Many years ago I had a similar problem with an F1 rear caliper. In the end after discussing with a local Honda dealer, he suggested re assembling the master cylinder but WITHOUT the restrictor valve (the little black domed bit of metal sitting at the top of the spring in your photo. I did just that, problem solved. A word of warning though, the restrictor is there to reduce the amount of pressure reaching the pistons, as the rear brake without the restrictor is incredibly powerful, and if you're not careful you can lock the rear very easily under braking. That said, I learnt very quickly to use it very gently, as 80% of your braking should be on the front anyway. Try it, if it works, it's your choice to either search out another restrictor valve or run without it.

Welcome and good luck searching. There are a few Honda Britain owners on here, and I'm sure one of them mentioning an online group/register for them. Hopefully one of them will read this and be able to give you links to the site. You may even find the current owner is registered there, so it may point you in the right direction.

Tricks & Tips / Re: Cleaning tips
« on: October 02, 2020, 07:59:03 PM »
Pure trichloroethylene is indeed hazardous, but was used as pain relief for women in labour, and as an analgesic in surgery. It was dyed blue with a substance called waxolene blue to allow anaesthetists to distinguish it from chloroform, and went by the trade name of Trilene. I have a trilene vaporiser attached to one of the old anaesthetic machines I am slowly restoring, and chances are most of our generation experienced it's effects at the dentist as a small child. It fell out of general use around the early 1990's, due to the nausea and vomiting it often caused. That said, it is still used for degreasing tanks, but with extractor fans and ventilation.

CB750 / Re: TROUBLE BLEEDING FRONT BRAKE

Before panicking further, I assume you have adjusted the caliper correctly, as in a 6 thou clearance between the fixed pad and the disc,,? If not, excess clearance there will have you chasing your tail forever.
