Yes unbelievable.

I think the romantic idea -"I could resurrect that pile of rust", overides common sense in  these cases. They ain't that rare yet - £1500 for a tidy example?

CB750 / Re: First question of many: Wheels & Brakes
« on: February 06, 2012, 11:34:07 PM »
Thanks for all the replies guys. I am thinking a wider rim (if possible) may ease my uneasiness and provide that little bit more traction i am looking for when stopping as some times the wheels have stopped before I have. I know this is also due to me not yet being used to the pressure required on the pedal so it isnt all the bike.

Alex

If you are new to the world of these beasts, worry not they do stop with enough effort.

I raced and did many track days on my tuned CB900 on similar if not the same brakes / wheels to the F2. Never locked a front wheel (rear yes) with some serious braking efforts.

If you are used to more modern stuff, this will seem so slow and lethargic with no doubt. However you will find you develop have a different attitude, enjoying the bike for other reasons. I'm building (eventually) a cafe racer from my F2 for the enjoyment and just to look at it. Any riding will be chilled.

I have an 77 F2 and but also owned a CB900 sometime ago. I stand to be corrected but think the brakes are exactly the same on the early models (with the similar comstar wheels as the F2). The FD 900 had 4 pot calipers from memory and may be worth a look?

Used to actually race on Phantoms.  I had a tuned 400 superdream of all things - no laughing now and not slow by anymeans (Moriwaki cam and big bore kit). Similar performance to a prody race powervalve 350. Tyres seemed fine to me at the time or was I just more stupid in those days!

Success!!!!

Thanks guys for all the advise. Got the cabs stripped tonight with help from all your tips.

Once in bits, I have to say that cellulose thinners is easily removing the built up fuel residue. Also I am investing in an ultrasonic cleaner this week and once fully stripped of all the crud, I will try them in this new toy. I saw the result s "buxton mick" has got with his cabs - very impressive.

Once the cabs are sorted I will get them back on the bike and do some miles on it to check the motor etc out prior to full strip.

Thanks again for all the help offered.

Announcements / Bakewell Motorcycle Museum - Group meet / Ride out
« on: June 17, 2011, 04:03:37 PM »
Anybody fancy a get together in the Peak District. Meet the people behind the posts!!

I have a business in Bakewell (Derbyshire) and a few doors down the road is a small Vintage m/c museum. Probably about 30 bikes - mostly British stuff. Website is:-

http://www.mccollection.net/

They have been featured in MCN a couple of times to my knowledge, you may have seen the articles?

I know the chap that runs it and floated the idea of perhaps the SOHC forum visiting. He said no problem but they are actually closing the collection permanently at the end of August.

Thought this would be a good opportunity for a ride out / get together. Bakewell itself is a nice place and in the beautiful Peak district. Also the area motorcycling Mecca, Matlock Bath, is only 9 miles away.

Was thinking Sunday  7th August. Let me know if you are interested and we can get some numbers together.

CB350/400 / 400/4 Gunked up carbs - Help.
« on: June 16, 2011, 08:41:32 PM »
Checking out why newly acquired 400/4 will not start. Not run since 2004. Spark seems fine but carbs very gummed up.

On stripping them, all floats  were seized solid. Have got them moving but cannot remove pivot spindles to strip them down further. Reading the site a good soak in cellulose thinners seems favourite.

Any other advice please?

CB350/400 / Ooops!! the garage just got another addition!!!
« on: June 16, 2011, 08:33:29 PM »
Another project has arrived to keep the 750F2 company (while it waits for me to get round to it).

Just picked up a 400/4 F2. More or less original besides added corrosion! Will post some piccies when I get time. As opposed to cafe project on the 750, this will be kept as Honda intended.

Hasn't run since 2004 I am told. It won't now either - spark seems ok but carbs full of fuel residue - see my other post.
