CB500/550 / Electric problem
« on: January 06, 2014, 12:49:05 PM »
I feel like over two days i took over the forum and I can not express how happy I am with all the comments and suggestions, thank you all very much!
Here we go another issue...
How should i fix this?
First picture is of rectifier and not sure if you can see it but on the red cable there is a hole burned from inside plus a weird white "dust" it doesnt look like DS or wemoto sell this kind of cables/connectors, do I have to buy new regulator/rectifier or can i try to take cables off and clean them.
Second picture is of a positive cable which fix to the battery, think it desperatly needs replacing... I was browsing the forum and still have not idea what kind of cable should i get to replace it. I'm thinking this should do the trick :
Ref: SSP/N
http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/battconns/battleads.php

Pictured is positive cable but the negative looks similar and I think think it is to blame form my bikes poor charging and general miss behaving.

Any suggestions?

Hello,
My Honda is first proper bike I'm working on my self, I do have a bunch of tools but all a rather cheap crappy ones, good for rounding nuts rather then undoing them...
Time to tool up! on a budget...  :'(

I keep reading about Halfords Advanced Pro any cons ?

Many thanks

Thanks for all the help so far, interesting info regarding grease, also, I'm thinking about getting Halfords Pro Torque wrench 8-60 Nm seems to cover all the range on my bike.
Is this tool any good? at £74.99 should be OK I hope.

Any recommendation in up to £100 price range?

One a slightly different note, can any one recommend a place to get just bowl o rings?
I'm about to clean my carbs and again... and will need them for sure as they expand very quickly and are super fiddly to put back.

Thanks

Just lost the Brittool 3/8 on fleabuy bummer  :'(

I have to make a list of the sockets and spanners and buy good quality ones... don't want to round off any bolts, and torque wrench is high on the list!

Thanks so much for advice so far, would love to get bike back on the road asap.

:)
I'm on North London, think it is time to buy torque wrench, not sure what size and make... just had a look at Machine Mart website and think this looks like a possibility http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cht141-1-2in-drive-torque-wrench

Slacken off all the tappets so they are not compressing the valves. Not sure where you live, but if it's anywere near me i have a nice 3/4 drive britool torque bar that does the job. Try not to be so heavy handed.

Thanks!
Sounds much easier then drilling  :D
It will also give me a better idea what kind of mess is there.
Think will need to buy tourque wrench  :(
In manual it said to slackened off all tappets, why would it be necessary?

DON'T whatever you do risk drilling it, you will always end up with some swarf loose in the engine, it's really not worth the risk. Take the rocker cover off and do it from underneath, it's very easy on a 500/550 four, on a standard 750 the engine has to come out! So get a rocker gasket and the tappet you need, couple of hours tops even if you've never done it before ;D

CB500/550 / Broken tappet
« on: January 04, 2014, 07:57:23 PM »
Hello,
After successful rebuild of carbs, thanks to this forum (and usa one too), I finally started to sort my bike properly, thought first check and adjust tappets, and while un screwing locknut I managed to brake tappet.
Now, to fix that I have to drill a hole and unscrew remaining bit, my problem is that it seems impossible to drill a straight hole on a angle...
Another thing is after close inspection of a tappet it surface seems very uneven, is this "normal", should I replace them all?
Any advice much appreciated.

CB500/550 / Re: Lifting the bike - no centre stand
« on: November 08, 2013, 10:13:52 AM »
I had same problem,
My solution to lift the front was a friend who whelped with lifting and couple of stands.
I was a bit concerned but it was sturdy enough to take the forks of and bike was left like that for a week or so. It didn't wobble of slip.
I had stands resting on the frame.

Ignore that jack in the background, I didn't use it at the end.

Hope that helps

Tricks & Tips / Re: MOTORCYCLE BIKE FRAME SCISSOR STAND
« on: September 01, 2013, 08:21:26 AM »
Busa, would you hang bike on the bottom of the engine? I would prefer to rest the bike on the frame.
I'm going to make a stand form MDF as I don't have much cash and I'm not convinced what I have found so far on the web.

Tricks & Tips / MOTORCYCLE BIKE FRAME SCISSOR STAND
« on: August 28, 2013, 02:37:03 PM »
Hello,
I'm stuck.
I have to take front wheel off (bolt holding calliper on my CB550 sheered thread) but I don't have centre stand.
Is any one  using MOTORCYCLE BIKE FRAME SCISSOR STAND?
They seems to be the cheapest option out there to lift the whole bike.
Any other ideas?

Many thanks
