Welcome to the world of precision engineering and reliable bikes! Working for Hardly Dangerous? That was a bit of a shock after Honda I'll bet, a background in John Deere or Massey Ferguson would be more useful in your current job

Welcome... remember Sunderland well in the 70's. Used to walk down to a place called 'Cowies' when the 400/4 first came out, to look at it in the window. Suspect my current one I own came from your neck of the woods too as its MBR XXXP reg.
Your in a good place here for 400/4 advice & banter.

Cheers for the replies guys. I reckon that looking at the shape of the 400/4 tank it's not worth pressuring it if it's in danger of losing shape. I will try prizing the dents out from the inside.

Just finished a customer's computer controlled test machine, which pressure tests automotive components under precise closed-loop pressure control using water up to 160 bar (around 2,300 PSI). I was thinking the other day that if I used the test machine to pressurise a 400/ 4 tank I have, that's quite nice inside but has serious dents in it, it may partially push them out. Obviously I will need to make adapters, which includes finding the thread size for the petrol tap (won't refer to it as petcock ... honest Bryan ) and a way of preventing flash rusting inside , when I have finished. Question is, what pressure can I safely take it too without popping it ? Another hair brained crazy Ashimoto 'experiment' I hear you all mutter and 'Ralph' up there saying "why doesn't he just get on with his fri**in' bikes' .... Really miss his banter on here. Ash

Your new Avatar is lovely Ash. Great to see you joining us 400/4 riders. How old is that photo by the way?
It was taken when the bike featured in ClassicMechanics in about 2011. Sadly it will have to become it's proper Varnish Blue very soon Here is my daughter Katie with it BTW we seem to be hijacking this post... sorry my fault mate ! Agree with Trigger on the seat resto. Blast the base and then take it from there depending on the overall condition and do any repairs on the underside if its a keeper. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Just out of interest Ash, have you ever met Neil (AKA Bike Pusher) ?
No, so I am not really in a position to judge him. One weird thing was though that when he joined (because someone on here accused him of bidding up on his own stuff, which he adamantly denied) there was an feature in one of the mags on the 400/4 with his mugshot in it but he denied it was him to start with, when I asked him. Then he said it maybe was him after all. One thing you can say about him is he doesn't start his prices off at silly money. Others on here have actually bought his stuff and met him, so more in a position to comment. One of the good guys seems to be Charlie at Oxford Classic Honda (fatgarrett on eBay) and I have warmed more to DK in recently years. Never dealt with freddiethefatfrog, as he doesn't even bother replying to emails. Do you like my new Avatar Julie

Excellent replies, as always, Ian (Orcadian) and others.
Here is what it comes up with. it actually says 'Not Taxed for on road use"

I don't think you like Bike-Pusher Ash.
It's not that I don't like him Roy, there were some reasonable comments he came out with on here and anyone who knows me would say I generally tend to see the good in people not the bad. It's just the breaking of nice bikes that I am uneasy with. In all honesty I am a bit of a hypocrite, as I have said on here before, because I have bought parts knowing that the bike they came from was almost certainly a nice example broken for its lucrative parts. Ralph never liked him though and dispatched him rather sharply with one of his killer posts !

Found these references on the US site from the 750 guru 'Hondaman'
"The K0 and early K1 had #120 jets, which proved too rich, especially if the bikes were run on premium gas and ridden in city traffic. This became #115 by February-March 1971 on the K1 in the 657A carbs (needles still in clip position#3). It then went to 110 on the later K1, and the needles then went to 4th notch from the top in the 657A carbs. The early 657B carbs with the holes in the tips of the idle air screws came with #110 mainjets, clip in position 4, with later "New Factory" K2 bikes usually having #105 mains, regardless of 657A or B series carbs. The 657B carbs with solid-tipped idle air screws had mainjets of #105 size, starting in the K3 sometime. By the K4, the mainjet stayed at #105 size until the 7A carbs mixed in the #110 sometimes: if the needle was the 27201 it had #105 jets, but if 271301, it had #110 mains. The PD carbs have different numbers, starting in the F1 bikes".
"Hey guys I wonder if you had used the Vinatge CB750 carb rebuils kit. I got one for my 1976 carbs # 086A The jet needle seems different slimmer but the same size lengh Stock # 27201 New # D54"

The reason I am asking is I sold 4 NOS Genuine Honda part needle kits listed for the K0/sandcast on eBay and the guy returned them saying they had the wrong needles put into the bag. They were definitely not messed with but they are listed for the German etc. market, where incredibly Honda produced a separate part for the HM300 pipes (possibly more restrictive) for the German etc market bikes.. The buyer claimed they were correct for a K1 but I can't find a reference for them for K1 only for a K2 (same source as you mentioned Mick). The buyer told me has 3 K0's one being a rare early UK one, so sounded like he knows his onions. So I want to list them again for the correct model. I doubt many German K0's have the original pipes but they are probably OK for a K2. They owe me quite bit so want to sell them.
It was always my belief that the jet needles are parts that should be the genuine Honda (KeiHin) part but since then lots of aftermarket kits have become available. Any opinions on needles in aftermarket kits?

I am sure I checked about a year ago and it was taxed so probably on SORN hopefully. It was a 71 bike but the DVLA refer to it as 1981 date of 1st registration.

Looked up some of my old bikes from the 70's on DVLA site and amazingly some are still around or were up to about 5 years ago. One was a Honda CB250K2 regd. 'HDT 2J' and it comes up on the DVLA site as 'Not Taxed for Road Use' . Does this mean that it is SORN or is it a race type bike ( lots of these used in CB350 classic racing).
