Not all lip-seals are locked in place, most just press in.... so long as its the correct size and material...

Put it in and see if it works... if it does, all well and good.

I have a carole nash fully comp multi-bike policy. 5 bikes the most modern of which is a 1999 zzr1100. My us import cb750 is currently insured on the vin number. The only issue i have had is them badgering me for a reg number after the 1st 30 days.. when i explained that its quite impossible to restore mot and register an import in 30 days they told me that the bike can remain covered on the vin but only for tpft.... which is perfectly ok as its not legal to ride anyway.

Footman james once told me that if you try to add more than one modern bike onto a classic multibike policy, the premium will shoot up.... 1 was the limit.

The stuff in the middle is what i was referring to roy. I use it on the RD which is obviously a 2t.... personally I wouldn’t use it on a 4 stroke, classic or otherwise, but it is a basic mineral multigrade with no anti-friction additives that could potentially build up and damage your wet clutch plates. Its labelled gear oil but is mineral multigrade not hypoid..... I would use a semi synth like either of the two oils next to it..... specialy formulated for bikes, relatively cheap and easily obtainable.. My advice would always be to use good quality oil and fuel for decent performance and longevity but at the end of the day its up to the individual.... decent oil is relatively cheap (although some is very expensive and a waste on low performance motors like these), engine rebuilds not so cheap, especially ageing classics.

Putting automibile oil into a motorcycle with a wet clutch was always a no no wasnt it?... especially as there are dozens of suitable options specially formulated for motorcycles...

Halfords do a mineral multigrade specially for bikes, why bither with the deisel car stuff.... beats me.

CB500/550 / Re: Wiring diagram for UK CB550K

Surely a us spec wiring diagram would do, since the headlamp works suggesting there is nothing wrong with the uk switch, the problem may be in the original wiring.... besides they are both probably almost identical.....?

Very cool..... i like the CBX behind it, i had a look at it when i was there... must be a contender for the ultimate classic jap bike... if only i had a big garage, and some more money  :-\

Talking of ethanol, i presume you guys use premium petrol in your classic 4strokes? I always do in my strokers and intend to with the cb750 once its otr... for a couple of extra quid per tank full it has to be worthwhile?

I avoid supermarket petrol like the plague! Except tesco premium which is quite good i believe  ;D

For a guy with “no mechanical skills” you look to be doing fantastically well!  Not too many people would be prepared to dig that deep into a motor without any prior knowledge... I would also expect the bottom end to be ok but as you can get your fingers on the con-rods you should be able to get a good feel for how worn or not it is before you compkete the rebuild, unless you already have done.... good luck anyway. Looks like a nice project!

Those american “muscle bikes” are real nice but quite expensive by the time you pay for shipping... I almost brought a schwinn stingray over from delaware a couple of years ago but it was gonna cost north of £800 so i settled for a uk bike instead.... a vindec same as the one i had as a lad

Some nice photos here

Looks like I’ve hijacked my own thread here... I’ll have to start another once i get fettling the 750
