Historic Vehicle Tax renewal
«

My 1971 CB750 qualifies for 'Historic Vehicle' free road tax, when I check it on the DVLA it says it is due on 1st November.
When it is up for renewal do I have to do anything, fill in forms and apply even though there's no fee payable?
The MOT is due in October, its debatable at the moment whether it will be back in one piece by then - if not do I have to SORN it?

As far as I understand, you have to notify the DVLA that it is an Historic vehicle and get it changed on their register/V5C re-issued.

I done mine last year ..
I went to the post office and done it old skool over the counter and the lady just put a line through the taxation class and wrote historic vehicle in the change of class section...
I think you can only do it if you are taxing it for use ....not if it is on a sorn...
Like I say the lady done it all I didn't have to pay either as I was expecting to and then have to claim it back

We did one over the internet, had to pay and then wait for a refund . We only went this route as the old dear at the post office said it couldn't be done there!!! Such porkies 😊😊😊 I have known others that did it at the PO so I will go that way next time, a lot easier by the sounds of it.

My Post Office couldn't do it either, there wasn't any way of doing it on their computer - no button for it or whatever. Funny how some Post Offices can do it while other can't.

I wonder if it's because some are main PO's and some are sub PO's ?

It was just at a local po where you can tax a vehicle. ....not a small sub po .
Just to clarify. ..the lady retained the v5 and sent it off for me..and a shiny new one with historic vehicle in print turned up about a fortnight later.

Having moved since I tried at my old PO in Kent, this is one of my local sub PO's in Lincolnshire, it's in a ladies front room, I don't think I will bother trying here !!!

I think he means his bike is already registered as historic vehicle, and wondering if the tax still has to be applied for. Did you move back to 1946 Julie?

I too thought the bike was registered as historic given that it's a 1971 machine and therefore Roy's first post is correct. As there's no duty payable you can re-licence it if has a current MOT. If it does not SORN it. If you don't do either you get a fixed penalty from the DVLA and if that's not paid a court summons follows. Probably ends up with a court fine of £300.
To change the taxation class is simple if it's eligible but this can only be done when it's re-licenced. You need to fill in the section on the V5C entitled 'changes to current vehicle' the last section in blue marked 'tax class'. Write historic in there and sign the declaration.
Take the V5C to a Post Office that deals with vehicle taxation, most do now and usually have a notice stating they do. The Post Office will separate the V5C removing the front page and that goes to the DVLA. The other part of the V5C is given to you. The Post Office will issue a receipt showing nil VED (vehicle excise duty). The receipt will also show that the V5C has been retained and sent to the DVLA. The MOT certificate is no longer required as it's checked electronically, if it's not valid it can't be re-licenced. A new V5C will come from the DVLA with the taxation class changed to historic.
If you look at the small print at the bottom of the changes section of the V5C it states that the taxation class can only changed when taxing and please apply at the Post Office. So if there's a problem at a Post Office that does deal with vehicle taxation the small print needs to be pointed out to them if a 'sharp intake of breath' is heard from the Post Office clerk.

That all makes sense. The one I did was 1) Taxing the vehicle from SORN, 2) Change of owner and 3) Change of taxation class to Historic. It must have all been too much in one go for the old girl at the PO, hence why I did it on tinternet.
