Crankshaft Journal Shells
«

Looking for guidance, have stripped my CB400/4 engine down to the bare bones to do a complete rebuild, have checked crankshaft journal shells to replace with new , but there is no colour coding on the shells only markings on outside which are D5F-A STD and D4F-A STD, how do I relate these markings to a colour code? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Simco.
You are about to tread the path taken by many others!
I had the same problems during my rebuild, try this link and it may provide some answers to your questions.

Hi Oddjob,
Useless posting picture as I don't know what position shells have came from, taken information off crank etc but have no idea how to work out which colour shells I require.
All from Rotor side I have:-
On the crank webs 2A,2A,2A,2?,2
On the crank case BBBBC
On the conrods (all very clear)I have 2D,3D,2D,2D.
So what main and conrod bearings am I looking for, can anyone tell me please ?
Would I be able to use crank form a different engine? If so?
Again from Rotor side I have:-
On the crank webs 1A,2B,1B,2B,2
On the conrods,I have 1C,3C.1C,1C
Original crank case BBBAA (Not being used)
Thanks in advance

Many thanks,
Firstly both cranks are from CB400/4 engines, poss reason for not using original is that there looks like to be some scoring on one of the journals and some dig marks in another,
With the markings on the crank webs, on the original I have a number but directly below it there are 2 holes going into the web, my assumption is!! that the letter could possibly be on the flat face below the holes? would I be right in thinking so?
How do you work out the colours from the crank ,con rods and crank case letters and numbers?
Would you recommend changing con rod shells? as the engine is totally stripped? even though I would need to source Red Shells ( which I will recheck tonight )
I see from your previous reply you also recommend changing primary drive chain and cam chain is this more precautionary due to lack of history?
Again many thanks for your help so far
