Trying to date MM/YY of my K2

Hi all,

Planning a new headstock plate for my K2; which is missing since PO. Anyways, frame # is CB7502077106.... can anyone please advise me how to go about getting the date of manufacture.

Unless someone has an adjacent number of course!

Don't know if it's any help but my K3 was manufactured in October 1972 (10/72) and has the frame number CB750-2208951

Did OZ have vin plates in 71/72 as i know IKdidnt?

I thought your K2 was a UK Bike, then NO VIN plate

Ah, well there ya go... that explains it - thanks chaps. (My 400/4 has VIN plate, but it’s a foreigner!) And thanks Ewan, so ‘she’ definitely pre-dates 10/72...

What set me onto this is that QLD Compliance is n/a to bikes pre 1975, and whilst I know the Fizzy & ‘750 both are, it’d be nice to show some proper proof.

That said, I’m impressed with the ‘can-do’ Australian system vs the bloody DVLA. A nice chap visited my garage, took photos, looked at the 3 post 1975 bikes, took $550 and 5 days later sent me alloy Compliance plates to be riveted to the frames. I told him the other 2 bikes were <1975... he took my word for it.

Next up is the Roadworthy cert - applicable to all bikes (MOT sorta thing). Spoke to ‘Mike’ who’ll do them, he’s happy to apply common sense to the Fizzy using a copy of its 10/01/1975 V5, and also use the 750’s 1973 V5 copy.
But get this... he’s too coming to the house to do all 5 Roadworthy Certs - RESULT!

Thence just admin / plates / insurances. Hopefully on the (sunny) roads early Jan.

Different numbering system mate. All UK, K2's had VIN's that started with 20.... didn't mater if it was a 1972 or 1975. You could always ask Honda UK

Trig did the US&UK k2 not come off the same line but then US numbers changed when they went k2/3/4/5 whilst UK carried on.

The volume of the USA orders would of been on a dedicated line and other country's would of been on another due, to so many different parts being fitted to the 750. It would of got too confusing ( as the Japanese loved the word "simplicity" ) with different looms, switch's, indicators, handle bars, rear ends and so on.  The 750 was first assembled at Hamamatsu and then moved to suzuka to join the CB500 four

Q. - why would the UK do away with VIN plates? My own synical guess would be the motor trade industry, not wanting Joe Soap realising that the motor he’d just bought was actually 14 months old (whatever). But yea, comments?

We never did away with the VIN plate, we never required one back then on a motorcycle  The USA had plates because of the federal law system of 1954, i think the UK was around 1975, when we started.

I think it may have been a bit later as i dont ever remember seeing a plate on a 500 but the 550 k3 did. Not sure though and it would only have been a couple of years.

I am not sure when it was Bryan, it would of been a part of the homologation thing but, you would have to trawl through it to find a date.
I have UK spec Honda's up to 1976 with no VIN plates fitted.

when you put your frame number in at CMSNL you get :
cb750k2 four k2 usa
model year 1971
base name k2
frame range cb7502000001 - cb7502099999
engine range cb750e2000001 - cb750e2099999

Thanks Joe, hadn’t thought of the CMSNL route, though there is nothing about my bike to suggest USA initial origin. It’s certainly in the DVLA system since registered mid 1972.
There is no VIN plate either, which fits in with Trig’s observation.
A CB750 reference book I have (John Wyatt) simply says the K2 types started at frame #2000001, and the K3 at 2200001 - though not stipulating end numbers.

It goes on to say the UK K2s were the early frame numbers, but doesn’t elaborate further.

So whether frame #(20) 77106 is early in the K2 run I have no idea; tho’ 1971 suggests so? it’ll be interesting to go back to CMSNL & see whether “UK” pops up as frame type.... or what.
