Now got a V5 !!

Hello Chums,
Things have been progressing slowly as the life / work balance goes to pot. However, I finally got round to filling out the DVLA form to get an age related plate, sent it with the USA title, NOVA, VJMC dating letter and money and back it came as an 'N' reg. That was easier than I thought.
I am now applying my mind to getting some plates made up - for my cars I've always used TIPPERS in Cornwall as with a bit of Solvol AutoSol they shine up really well.
The question for you my friends is: do I go for a two line or 3 line rear number plate? By 3 line I mean that the year letter appears on its own at the base of the plate; a bit like some old Triumphs you see. Or have a 2 line where the year letter appears beside the three numbers. To my mind the latter may be more representative of old Hondas from the 70's. Whaddaya think?
Also I will be getting some curved plates for the front mudguard - Tippers do the mountings for £15. Photo may appear below.

I went for three line, also from Tippers, on my CL450, because it’s a slim bike, plus the long plate covers a nasty scrape at the bottom of the mudguard! It looks right for the bike, the downside is that the plate is narrower than the brackets, which stick out slightly on either side.

My 750 has a two line plate, which also looks right for the bike, so I’m no help really.

Downside is they keep the VJMC dating letter (you have to send the original which has an embossed stamp) and the American title (which has a watermark); so make copies as you won't see the originals again.

I got my title returned back to me when I registered my US K8 last year? Didn't need a vjmc cert either.

You don't unless it was a late or incorrect registration and you want the right year plate. I have a 1977 CB750F2 that wasn't registered until 1980 so I could have got a dating letter to change that. Couldn't be bothered though.

Go for the 2 line plate.  Pressed ali looks way better than plastic.  Are you having a yellow plate or black?

I'm going for ally plates on black; the letters & numbers shine up really well with a polish.
I've looked at loads of photos from the '70s and decided to go for a 2 line plate and a pair of curved for the front mudguard. A 3 line plate for the rear just wouldn't look right in my mind; OK on Brit Iron but not a 70s Honda.

Still having fun and games with DVLA registering my CB750 K4. VJMC stamped original dating certificate and all other paper work correct on submisssion 1st Feb. Letter from DVLlA 2.5 weeks later asking me provide manufactures dating certificate which as we know is unobtanium and the reason for supplying the VJMC certificate. Therefore replied as such.

Wednesday this week letter arrives from DVLA saying they want the bike inspected by SGS, some independent vehicle inspection company. They will come to my house on a day still to be confirmed. After which if all is to there satisfaction I will get an age related registration 4-6 weeks later!!!

The main problem I see is that there was no US title with the bike to verify it is what I claiming it is.

Some years ago I registered a US imported Triumph TR car with no title, but was able to transport the car to the DVLA office in Birmingham for inspection. Rather frustrating now with no regional offices. Just glad I started the process now and not in the spring/ summer 😫

DVLA are justifying their existence the moment and being total planks. Not having problems myself but I know many, many people who are having real issues with them due to DVLA's incompetence, mainly just because the 'I's haven't got dots on top and the T's aren't crossed

Just to show there is no rhyme or reason to the DVLA, I filled in the forms for my CL450, like you no US title, just a NOVA certificate and a VJMC dating letter, they sent me a V5 no questions asked this time! They cocked it right up with my CB750, said there was no trace of that NOVA number and told me to ring HMRC, who told me that yes, it was on the system, that DVLA were useless and that I should send the forms back to them. Again no inspection, just a V5.

With both bikes I did eventually get all my original documents sent back to me, long after the V5.

Just had SGS inspection this week and only got the letter last week , a nice chap called Peter came and took some photos, ring them up and pester SGS for an appointment date.

Hooooray.

Got me V5 today!!! SGS visited 19th March. All very straightforward, chap took photos of the frame, engine numbers and VIN plate. So 8 weeks from submission to receiving the V5, and everything was in order, just no original US title.

SGS guy reckons DVLA randomly select about 1 in 10 V5 applications for inspection. Again really pleased I started this process in February and not June.
