Strange things people carry on bikes

Anyone else seen odd things people carry on bikes. Last year saw a Dachshund sticking out the back of a rucksack being carried by a lady on a scooter in London.

Probably the most dangerous was a guy on a bike with the metal part of a shovel in his rucksack so the entire handle was sticking out way above his head. Kept wondering what if the handle caught on a tree branch. Also another guy with a wood saw, again in a rucksack sticking out with the blade pointing at his neck.

We have seen everything from 10 bags of cement, to a full set of ladders, 1000 fresh hens eggs and a goat being carried on scooters but.... that's in India where they transport everything on scooters 🤣🤣🤣

Biking gear

Men – always the driver, t-shirt, shorts, flip-flops and sunglasses are essential, plus a mobile phone in left hand and probably being used. A helmet is legally required by the driver but optionally worn and often carried on the arm. No helmet requirement for passengers, normally at least 2 passengers on every bike.

Women – Sari and optional flip flops. They ride side saddle carrying a week’s shopping and up to five children. All bikes are manufactured with a side step and sari guard, as side saddle is legal.

The Right of Way

In India only one thing has the right of way and that is the cow. Everyone has to defer to the cow without exception, even the President.

When we lived out in Thailand bikes were everywhere and used to move everything, they were mobile shops, cafe's and of course people carriers. As they were the people's transport if you hit one it was automatically your fault, we watched a video once of a girl on a bike going round the barriers on a train level crossing, the train hit her, immediately our Thai friends said that it was the train drivers fault.

I always carry everything on my bike, as no car. A few to many bikes though
 From wheelbarrow to flatscreen tv, and motorcyclewheels and tyres are a  recurring sight.
When it really gets too big I use my Freebird trailer....

When I first got married in the early 80's and we'd bought our first house, my wife and I did several shuttle runs to the local B & Q to bring rolls of loft insulation home on our bikes (we didn't have a car).  She had a C90 and managed two rolls per trip, I had a CB750 and got 3 rolls on for one trip, but some strange looks from on lookers whilst riding home.  Fortunately it we only lived a couple of miles from the store at the time.  Max speed (loaded) as I recall was about 25 mph!

Once did 15 miles with 8 square yards of carpet tiles stacked and tied on the pillion seat, interesting, as the heavy stack did not lean well into bends!

Why make several trips with bike parts when you could take the whole bike?!!

Many years ago a friend I worked with had  a ZZR 600, we worked next door to a hardware shop. He popped there lunchtime and bought a 25kg bag of coal.
At the end of the day, he sat on his bike with his arms in the air, we sat the bag of coal behind him and duck taped him and the coal together.
He had a 25 mile ride home and got there okay.

Many years ago a friend I worked with had  a ZZR 600, we worked next door to a hardware shop. He popped there lunchtime and bought a 25kg bag of coal.
At the end of the day, he sat on his bike with his arms in the air, we sat the bag of coal behind him and duck taped him and the coal together.
He had a 25 mile ride home and got there okay.

How did he get off

I often pick up a 25Kg bag of chicken feed.  It sits on the pillion seat quite well and only needs a bungee cord to stop it sliding around.  The paper ones are best, less slippery.

I didn't learn to drive a car until I was in my mid thirties so I always seemed to have to carry strange things in ingenious ways.

(The one thing I could never manage was getting my bass and amp to gigs, so I used to book a black cab.  You can imagine their surprise when they turned up to find me with a bass, amp head and an Orange 4x12 cabinet on the pavement.  They were very good about it and I always gave a genorous tip.)

Its amazing what you can carry when you have too.
I used to carry all my chippy tools on a Suzuki GS125 I used to travel from Colchester to Walthamstow everyday. I couldn't go over 25mph as the front end would shake violently and then lift.
I upgraded to my Aprilia Pegaso at 18 and that gets loaded like an old donkey to this day.
I broke the rear subframe and blew the rear shock carrying 25kg of nails, 110v transformer, chopsaw and Ali hopup all in one trip.
I didn't lern my lesson as a few years later I did it again carrying my dad two hopups, two tups of ready mixed paste and tools
