I've been making tools out of rebar to use with an sds hammer drill for things like this, not much resists it.

Hahahaha the biggest problem with Lockdown is that many people don't have the impetus (as in a kick up the arse) to do things mechanical because A) you don't need the car/bike to get to work tomorrow or B) even if you get that long term project running sweetly, there have been no guarantees that we can drive or ride it next week/ month/ year.

I'm just the same....only as I got older my my biggest mistake was buying a number of projects so I never get any of them finished. Keeps me out of mischief though !

If one of my Grandsons bought a crappy old bike or car, and needed my help.......well that would be quite a different matter.

All I can say is that despite all the trials and tribulations over the past year or so, God willing, most of us are still here to tell the tale. Long may that be the case. Soon be summer.

I had that recent joy thank goodness I have a cordless  impact driver as well as a sharp hacksaw!

1. I keep on getting distracted by side issues to avoid starting the unfamiliar task.

I discuss this with my wife regularly, when I was younger, just used to get on with it - from basic DIY to full 2 story extension. Now, I think it out too much and consult the tinternet too much. Took me all summer to build myself up to replacing the rear roof on the house last year - 30 years ago, when I originally done it, I decided one week and done it the following week! (Without consulting any YouTube videos!).
My time is also more valuable now than 30 years ago!

I think as long as you have the right project to get stuck into the more enthusiasm you'll have for it (until you hit the first big problem maybe....).
I became really bored during this second stint of lockdown so I contacted the BIL with the offer to restore his Z400 as long as he buys all the bits I need straight away so as not to delay things and dampen my enthusiasm in the process. It's been a godsend, I'm really enjoying it, keeps me out of the house and I can listen to music all day. I also have a quick go on the drum kit every time I go out there. Even the rain and cold doesn't put me off as the dehumidifier keeps the garage air nice and dry.
I think if you get one of those jobs that you know will be a real pia you'll find any excuse not to do it. I had this a couple of weeks ago with a tree in the garden that needed to be pollarded. Cutting the branches off was easy but it was spending the next six hours cutting them up to put into 12 garden sacks and bringing them through the house and loading the car was the off putting aspect. Had I'd known it would take two trips to the dump each one taking two hours I would have made every excuse not to do it and move home instead  . Still it's all done now, I had my first jab yesterday, been for a 7 mile walk this morning and about to go into the garage for a couple of hours to sort out the bag of replated fasteners.

I have 3 bikes and had a good list of jobs to do in the garage over the Winter. The moment I'd finished them I started suffering anxiety. I'm not retired either, but have been working from home most the time since April. There's a lot to be said for bikes and mental health .
