just a quick follow up.  i should have gone on a few test rides first as i just dont like the burgman at all.  i need to try a silverwing as they are meant to be more bike like.

The CX500 fully faired with hard luggage .. and quilt stitched his and hers back rests? That's the spirit, forget scooters...( or is there another Silverwing?!)

Hi Andy,
Yes, there is another Silver Wing - a Honda scooter!  I always hankered after the type you mentioned though as a replacement for my very trusty 81 CX500A - ended up buying a VF750 S and put a fairing and Sigma luggage on that too having got the Continental touring bug.  Ended up with Wings which do most things extremely well, now on my second 1500 SE. 

Btw, thanks for your positive input to the DVLA post - I hope we can get somewhere with it,

As a matter of personal interest what don't you like about the Burgman - I ask as it's on my Bucket list (low down on the list) to own one?

I started with Mopeds then graduated to Scooters finally getting my first proper motorcycle a couple of years later - a Triumph Twenty One.

So for me as a previous Scooter owner I would judge the Burgman against my previous scooters - Garelli Capri's 70 & 80, Viscount Prior 200 & the Maico Letta 250.  I could not afford a Lambretta & hated the shape of the Vespas. My best mate had a Triumph Tigress Twin - fast in a straight line but the dinky wheel diameter made it hopeless on bends or uneven road surfaces.

Who knows given time you may grow to like the charactaristics of a scooter provided you can let go of your motorcycle mindset.  Scooters are more about urban cruising and looking good in your Parka Jacket lol.

to be honest, it's a good scooter but feels a little small.  the 650 is much nicer but many horror stories about very expensive belt replacements, but the silverwing seems very reliable.  but like you say, the biggest problem is the mindset issue and i'm struggling to get my head round it!

I bought a new 650 Burgman December 2016 now covered 22,000 miles.The “Quality” on it a joke😡,you need to remove plastics to do anything the centre stand both wheels and exhaust are heavily corroded even though it’s garaged and kept clean.Problems so far are brakes continually seize due to pistons sticking ( common on these scooters ) making maneuvering around hard,all wheel bearings failed the rear collapsed !! Radiator needed replacing last year crush washers on main oil lines failed dumping engine sump contents on rear wheel/road brake discs replaced twice on front once on rear wheels.Plus points are WHEN it’s running as it should it’s comfortable pretty quick and handle well for a lardy scooter I go touring on it.Suzuki quality is terrible and they’re reluctant to address warranty issues I test rode an X-ADV but although a great engine/gearbox not for me as bit high getting on and not as roomy as a Burger,there are some nice low miles Silverwings around ( stopped importing them 2016 ) I’d consider one of those as an alternative to a Suzuki of either 400cc:or 650cv 😁

Wow....I know Suzuki is not the best manufacturer in the world when it comes to paint and finish....but they used to at least be reliable in terms of enginering.

Seems that is no longer the case. 2 sets of front discs in 22k miles is crazy. I don;t expect to have to change PADS that often....let alone discs. Oil line failures, bearing failures..these all point to the use of cheap parts where better quality is indicated. And, lets be honest....22k in 5 years is not exactly overworking the thing. I do more miles commuting to work

Just wondering where the Suzuki Scooters are made ? That might explain why their quality and longevity is so poor !

Maybe the old Honda CG125 factory in Brazil, the quality of those bikes was dreadful

I've googled the the Silverwing scooter they all seem to be automatics what sort of box is it CVT based don't like the sound of that on a 2 wheeler unless it's a dual clutch design?

Suzuki don’t sell the 650 in Europe anymore not sure where they’re made.Just had to drill the threaded brake pad pin out on rear caliper it was rusted solid and the parking brake operating lever has broken.I traded it in for another bike recently for £4K I paid almost £9K for it with extras but I changed my mind and kept it and just fitted 2 new tyres again.They are a bag of shite and I’d steer clear unless you can get a realy good deal a post 2013 is the better one to go for.Current Silverwings are DCT older Silverwing 600 are twist and go belt/roller driven.
