Honda Cb400f Rebuild

Hey!

I have recently inherited a CB400F from my Father-in-Law which looks almost complete. As far as I know, the engine has been fully rebuilt with a new loom too.

By the looks of things, it looks a case of attaching the front light, fitting the petrol tank, attaching the fuel lines, seat and other little bits.

I will try and do most of the work with the help of the Haynes manual and Google, but are there any specialist garages that can thoroughly check it over to make sure everything is done correctly ect.

I wouldn't worry about getting it checked over by a garage just yet, just systematically work through the jobs you have identified with the first aim being to get it running. There will be lots of little challenges along the way, just keep posting when you hit a snag and you'll get plenty of advice and learn as you go along. Nice to have a 400 restore in my neck of the woods, I live in Peterborough.

Hopefully the carbs have been properly cleaned and rebuilt as it's these that give 90% of the starting/running problems. Do you have any history of the work undertaken and bills for spares used?
Any problems though just post a question and you will get a response almost straight away.

And a good tip............if you strike a problem go to the 400 Four section of the forum and use the search box on the upper r/h side to type in the issue you have, most 400/4 questions have been asked at some point

First hurdle..

I'm putting in the engine mount bolts but noticed a big gap on the top one between the engine and the frame. Is there supposed to be a washer / spacer there?

Unable to attach photo due to size..?

Do you mean this gap? If so yes you should have a spacer.
If you can't find it let me know and I'll measure one for you so you can have one made. Unless someone has a spare one.

That's exactly it! I haven't a clue where it is so if anyone has a spare or I can get one made, that would be really helpful.

O.D. = 24.0mm
L = 12.6mm

Hello and welcome to this wonderful forum,
If you are on with engine bolts, be careful with the two lower ones at the front of the engine, through the frame rails - they should be slightly different lengths, the shorter one going on the left hand side.  This prevents it from possibly puncturing the oil gallery, which has happened.  There's only a couple of mm difference.  If you look right underneath when fitting the bolts and the end of the left hand one starts getting really close to the casing - don't go any further, something's wrong.

Yes that is correct for the spacer.

Ian, do you know where the info that the lower hanger bolts are different lengths comes from? I've read other posts that say the same, but the parts book gives the same part number for both the left and right hanger. My understanding is that they are both M10x74.

Dylaxn, the other critical thing about the installation of the two hanger bolts apart from the length, is that the spring washer must be installed at the head end of the bolt.
