Yes I know it's a bit of a bodge job, but has anybody had any success in brush painting crankcase in situ. If so what paint would was used. Please don't shout at me, only asking!!!!!!!!

POR15 is designed to be brushed on... great coverage etc.

I've used brushing coach enamel on a whole car - one of the best paint jobs I've ever seen was on  Moggie 1000 van it was done in the 1970's by a local Painter & Decorators in maroon.
Amended from 100 to 1000 thanks Bryan.

In metal crankcase is a primer needed or straight to metal. I suppose it depends on the paint used.

Regarding primer, I spray painted the oil filter cover on my cb750 without primer and it chipped up pretty badly. I did it again, this time first with a light coat of epoxy primer and all is good so far.

I painted the frame of my xs650b with Rustoleum combicolour, it's again intended to be brushed on.  I found heating the tin and keeping the parts warm gave an excellent finish even in my dusty garage.
