Ultrasonic cleaner solution for carb parts etc

I have a small ultasonic cleaner that we used for cleaning some old jewelery - its not large but okay for smaller items such as jets, emulsion tubes, carb bowl etc.

Can anyone recommend a cleaning solution please?

Concentrated screen wash diluted 50/50 with de ionised water.

Ted, if possible try using a hot mix too… definitely softens up the dirt a bit better.

Definitely hot, but wouldn't go over 60°C... (discolored some painted brake calipers by going to 80°C...)

Screenwash is a good idea. If you want a formula designed for carbs, these guys market various potions!

I tend to run mine at about 50 to 60degC.

If you have enough room in your cleaner use an old glass jam jar or similar with petrol in it. Put your parts in the jar then into just plain water in the cleaner. Just enough water so that the water displaced by the jar doesn’t spill out the cleaner. The jar also contains all the muck cleaned off the parts.

I watched Junk & Disorderly last week (must watch TV if you are a biker) and Alan Millyard told Henry Cole that you must not put your fingers into an ultrasonic bath when it is working as the ultrasonic waves will kill the nerves in your fingertips and you'll end up losing the finger. Is this true or was Alan joking, nobody was laughing but surely a domestic ultrasonic cleaner isn't that powerful?
As an aside poor old Alan had a nasty 'off' last week when the Triumph chopper they bought refused to turn!

Funnily enough I’ve been dunking my fingers a fair bit of late into my ultrasonic bath. An odd and mildly unpleasant sensation, can’t really describe it. But, whilst I have a growing distain for ‘authority’ etc, surely if such cleaners maimed folk they’d have been outlawed long ago?

PS… fingers all present / correct and pink. Phew. Furthermore, they’ve survived a few years ownership of a V Twin MotoGuzzi, which leave my hands numb after an hour 😬

I've tried the glass jar with petrol & it seems to have worked quite well on the brass ware - my Ultasoc bath is not large enough to put a carb body in a jar but great tip.

I've ordered some Allendal Carb Cleaner to try as well.

Nice one Ted👍. Make sure you rinse the carbs after using the Allendale cleaner to stop any white deposits appearing after a few days.
