CB550K3 rebuild - spare spring?

Does anyone recognise where this flimsy little spring may have come from - it seems to be left over on my CB550K3 rebuild.

Looks a bit like a rocker shaft spring - hard to tell the diameter in the photo.

This is a neat 500 restoration in the USA.

Steering lock spring?
It might also be off the carbs especially if they are still the dreaded PD carbs, more springs than a mattress those carbs.

The spring is very loosely wound and is 12mm in diameter and 15mm in length. The actual wire is very thin, only about a mil at most. It doesn’t look as if it can be a return spring but rather some sort of spacer/cushion 🤷🏻â€â™‚ï¸

There are springs very much like those fitted to the CB500K and CB550F carbs, they are fitted to the throttle lifter shaft. Have the carbs been apart, I'm almost certain I've seen that spring recently, just can't remember where as I've got so many parts disassembled at the moment.

I'm thinking steering lock spring now - have you replaced it or had it in bits?

Carb lifter arm shaft spring. Thought the picture scale may be a little deceptive?

Got 3 sets of carbs apart ATM Phil, could be any one of them, I was cleaning those springs recently to get them ready for zinc plating so it could be that's where I remember them from.

If that spring is parallel rather than conical I’m betting it’s out of the oil filter housing…maybe.

Well done Oddjob and Ted. It is indeed from the old steering lock which I had to drill out due to there being no key. I have fitted a replacement so the spring is surplus to requirements (thank goodness).
As usual guys, many thanks for the help. This old thing is going to live again

Haha Sesman. It looks as if he’s just told me it was running when he parked it up. Truth be told this bike was written off in a very nasty accident nearly 25 years ago. My mate who owned (and crashed it) sadly passed away at the end of 2021 and the bike was found tucked away in one of his sheds. I’m trying to get most of it (it needed a new frame and crankcase housing and various other bits) back on the road as a tribute to a very good friend as I’m sure he was saving it as a retirement project.
