Which oil

Has anybody put putoline s4 mineral oil 10w40 in their CB750k2 as bike seam to be noisy compared with motul 10w40 or is it me

When I had oil changes in my various cars they all seemed noisier after an oil change (probably as the old oil had thickened) with just one exception - that was when a local service garage started using Total MC 5w/30 synthetic Oil - it was ultra quiet but quite expensive.

It has mentioned here previously about high Zinc oils for the 750.

I suspect you need the high ZDPP like below - others here will know better than me.

The 10W40 should be fine for these engine as it states 1100ppm zinc content.

The high zinc is focused on flat tappet cam type valve gear which these Honda engines don't use.

Flat tappet arrangements have (using American V8 type as example ) circular tappet face, usually ground slightly convex, and or skew grind on camshaft lobe that causes the tappet assembly to "walk" round incrementally from each hit with the cam. It's a swingeing regime for oil to undergo with a high pressure and skewed skurfing action, hence the particular focus from those users on this oil aspect. High mileage with inadequate oil specification usually has them ground out into quite significant concave pattern on tappet surface.

These Honda on std cam etc don't need those elevated levels to be OK.

Yes Ted,

many motorcycles vintage and current use dry clutches, BMW and Ducati for example.

yes funny they've written that, perhaps they mean engines with wet clutch OR dry clutch arrangements are fine to use this oil. It's clunky what they've written, I can see that, but also shortened to put it on a product label can see how they've ballsed it up.

Friend some years ago worked for 3M in abrasives, and always corrected anyone who said " wet n dry or wet & dry" for his product  through clenched teeth would point out it couldn't be both wet and dry and was called wet OR dry, even writ large on the back of the sheets

Regular changes is perhaps more important.

Oil brands seem to have proliferated in recent years not like the 1960's when Castrol & Shell seemed to dominate the market.

Like tyres it's probably down to personal choice with cost and subconscious marketing involved in our decision making. If it's the right grade any oil is better than no oil.🤔🤔🤔

Amendment

Oil discussion made me remember modern pre-oilers used on old engines & in some race engines for cars - some sort of reservoir with a plunger that would get the oil pressure up before you turned the engine over.
