There are a lot of interesting bikes in the auction BUT Pugh has a record of not being a cheap sale for anything

That is one haul!
Be interested to see how the auction goes as the last one near me indicated a significant drop in prices - which seems to be a trend in both the bike and car market.

A guy in the next village built this monster - now sold on I believe & improved in many areas.
I actually did the DVLA Inspection visit to Mr Bettson's  house in Mickleover circa 1979/80 - he used to work for British Rail.
The original engine was a pair of Siamesed Hillman 998 Rally Imp car engines, twin electric fan radiators side mounted as panniers. His biggest nightmare was building a clutch that could handle the torque - last time I spoke to him about 35 years ago  it was still an issue.

It's been in some magazines here is a link to a review of sorts.https://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.php?198695-For-the-motor-cyclists-out-there-Bettson-V8

I think the build reflects his British Rail roots - were talking the tilting train era.

The APT. Used to test it on the line north of Derby past our gaff in Duffield. Fab technology never perfected. Am I right in thinking the Pendolino west coast modern trains use the idea?

Yes they do Tim. They perfected the system, BR was starved of money to finish the job. as is the British way with any new and groundbreaking invention!

When I was the test manager for the new fleet of trains introduced on London Underground I was based at the railway test track located in Old Dalby, it used to be the Midland Main Line to rival the east and west coast main lines but was closed in 1966. I worked there with a lot of guys who had been the test engineers for BR and they spent years on the tilting train project, there was a gas turbine tilting train as well as the electric version but it never made it past the protoype stage. The tiling trains were tested at Old Dalby during its protoype stage. BR eventually abandoned the test track and it fell into dissrepair. It was leased by Virgin Trains who tested every Pendalino train before they entered service, strange how things pan out!

As a footnote, when BR was at the test track they undertook the famous nuclear flask test where they drove a diesel train carrying a nuclear flask into a solid concrete block, the concrete block was still there when I left in 2017, it was too big to break up!  I was told the test itself was (or should have been) conducted in private with just BR, the Govt and British Nuclear Fuels present however the farmer who owned the land next to the test track built a small grandstand and charged the general public a fee to watch it!
