500 original dimensions Gear Lever question?
« on: August 02, 2024, 10:51:16 PM »
Can someoone tell me what the distance should be between the center of the gear shift pivot shaft to the end of the gear change lever where the little rubber sits in cm or mm please?

I'm asking about an original lever for dimensions please.

I can tell you that after the splines on my 500/4 gear lever became worn, I fitted one from a CB750 K2, which worked perfectly well in terms of bend angle and length. At the time, the item for a CB500/4 was unobtainable from any of the usual sources. I intended to find and fit an original, correct part when I could source it, however things looked fine and worked so well that I left it all alone.

The one fitted to my 500 was 5" between the center line of the shaft & grip shaft pivot ignoring the curvature/bend angle.

I sourced a 'reproduction' lever from Itally the same dimensions are  4.25" so it has a greater clearanace at the alternator housing so gear shifts should be easier with my size 12 boots being 3/4" shorter.
I would be interested to find out how close it is to the original in effective length.

What is the gap between the alternator cover and the rubber on the lever please?

Ted, Just to add my measurement was the straight distance how far the lever is in front of the pivot point. The actual length of the gear lever is about 11.5cm.
Lever about 3.8mm from alternator cover.

Mine is 11.5cm from centre of shaft to centre of foot-piece, and 3.5cm from alternator cover.  Over the years I have found lots of Honda gear levers are compatible, CB550, 750, CB125S and T, CG125.  (Same on my CB350, I took off the awful original with the rods and replaced with CB125S.)

Thanks Seablower my " clearance/gap" from alternator cover is about 18 mm so I'm happy with that bit of extra for my big feet.
