The close throttle cable....... cb550k3
« on: December 28, 2024, 10:07:22 PM »
For ages, I have been running the cb550k3 without the close throttle cable.  So finally I purchased one from DS and spent an hr or so trying to fit it.  But it would not fit.  So I returned it and purchased another one with the same p/n from a different supplier.
Spent another hr trying to fit it.  The problem was the same as the cable from DS.  The inner cable was just to short by about 8-10mm.
Here is a pic of the cables fitted to my spare set of 550 carbs which I use for bits when necessary.

I have had the bike from NEW so know its history well.

So it turns out I need a close cable that has a centre cable that is about 8-10mm longer.  Or the outer cable is too long.
Anybody else had this problem.  I wondered if some parts of this bike came off an F1 or F2 or an earlier cb550.

Bless you.  I have spent hrs farting about trying to get this right.  So I have fitted the close first and did battle to get the pull fitted.
Finally done and what a tight fit.  I can see why all the cable adjustment is on the open (pull) cable.

One job less.

Thanks

As if a K3 model doesn't already have enough cables and tubes...
I have never bothered to fit the closing cable. It's still in its plastic bag...

I don't remember any of my bikes back in the1960's having two cables
Honda CB400NA Superdream (current money puddle)
Honda CB500 K1 (second money pit)

This is a neat 500 restoration in the USA.

I'd always install one if it's the original specification and carbs were so designed.

If you've ever seen anything with a throttle that can't be competently closed then likely you'd feel the same.

In various scenarios,  a motocross bike that had flipped and pinched the outer throttle cable was left going berserk as many tried to get it stopped.

A trike recently that someone was turning round at a bike meet, throttle stuck and rammed the rider's knee into a gate post ... to snap his femur  :o

A friend working as insurance assesor in motor vehicle tells me that it can invoke cover if materially contributional to accident outcome, it constitutes a modified vehicle as its considered primary safety item if fitted by the factory.
He gave example of a bike rear ended by a car at roundabout entry, punted out into traffic passing the bike to get hit by that too, no "shut" cable was fitted, legal representation unable to prove this was not a factor in the accident.

To me there's absolutely no point in not fitting one, whether you think it does any good or not. In law you're not qualified to make that decision.  There's no penalty either if the while system is correctly assembled, adjusted and maintained.

I'm sure they put the cables on the carbs before putting the carbs on the bike.  It's all in the order of build.  But I find taking the carbs off and putting them on just as bad......

There must have been a need for two throttle cables.  It is extra effort for the manufacturer to do this.

Just trying to cure a hanging idle.  Now I know the carbs are shut.  We will see.
