cb550K3 Starter Relay Solenoid - take apart??
« on: January 28, 2025, 07:18:35 PM »
The old K3 has sat for a couple of months and now gives the "click" from the starter relay.  Battery is fully charged.  Sometimes it will work, but not always.

So..... I was going to take the Solenoid off and take it apart and smear some grease on the sticking bits.  I have done this on the gt750, or was it the Yamaha.  Anyway, one of the other bikes and it fixed the problem.

But having taken the Solenoid off the K3, I am not sure I should remove the 2 screws.  It looks like a factory sealed unit.

Are these things serviceable?.  I should check the voltage from the starter switch(handlebar) first, I guess to make sure at least 12v is getting thru.

Honda say not but with care yes they are, you have nothing to loose by trying if it stays knackered you still need a new one!

Strange things.............. if I put the engine kill switch to OFF, the solenoid works.  With the switch to RUN it does not work.
So I start it in the OFF position and then with the start button still pressed turn the switch to ON and the engine starts.
Why's that then..... anyway I managed the first 20 miles of the year in the frosty but sunny conditions.  Another little niggle to fix at some time.

I’d check to make sure the switch cluster male and female connectors are in the correct locations.

I might be off kilter here, that sounds suspicously like an earthing problem somewhere, it's amazing how wiring can back feed to make a circuit unexpectedly.

Used to be common seeing vehicles at night with the rear side lights on that would go out when braking and illuminate an indicator instead.
