CB500K2 four 1975 oil pick up fitment
« on: February 20, 2025, 08:50:17 AM »
Thanks for help withother issues , its great to have input from others with more experience on these engines.

I have another question, re the fitment of the oil pick up filter in sump.

It is quite a loose fit and only held in position by sump plate. I would have been happier if there was an O ring to seal it, but no groove apparent.

Is this how they are or have I missed something?

That is how it works

I think the oil level is high enough so it doesn't matter about the seal

No O ring fitted to the pick up on 500 Martin.

I thought that was strange as well Martin especically as the 400 iirc does have an O ring.

As Julie & John have said that's how they made it.

If you look at the strainer you'll see it has 4 small legs, these touch the bottom of the sump and keep it in place and also serve as the gap for the oil to flow through before entering the strainer, they are high enough so that any sludge at the bottom of the pan doesn't get sucked up into the strainer, until of course it gets deep enough for it to do that, in which case you've already got severe problems. So no need for an oring.

Thanks for comments.

Assuming oil level is higher than joint you would think that unstrained oil would be sucked in.

Maybe its designed like that so that is strainer blocks can still draw oil ?

Oil, like air and water will take the easiest path and that isnt the length if the close fitting connection of strainer to crankcase
